Of course there are a lot of great British comedy's, and we Yanks must certainly have a different perspective on the issue than any Brit. There is so much comic genius on the BBC, but I will vote for, "The Young Ones" straight away. I love Monty Python and so many others, but for me The Young Ones have a fresh approach to comedy -- British style. What do you think about the Young Ones, and what / whom are some of your other favorites?

    In no particular order...

    Fawlty Towers
    The Office
    Little Britain

    THE. BEST. EVER.

Of course Only Fools & Horses is a classic too, but I think the above were better

Don't you mean, "The Black Vegetable"? :D

Anyway, as I said the hijacked 10th time posted cherry OS thread, The Office has to be one of the most clever, witty, and beautifully acted series ever to come out of the UK. I just can't get enough of David Brent, his character is so lame, and funny and annoying, he's just perfect.

So, I guess in this order

    1. The Office, by far.
    2. The Black Adder
    3. Monty Python's Flying Circus
    4. Absolutely Fabulous
    5. Benny Hill (yeah, I know . . .)

Fawlty Towers and Monty Python, yes...

Mr. Bean!?!?! Sorry, silliness to me. Never liked him. The thing is, there aren't that many American comedies that can stand up to Fawlty Python... at least none recently.

not everything Monty Python did was riotous - but they have a ton that are beyond reproach which sort of stand out and pull everything up a notch or two :D Never seen the Office.

Monty Python is a timeless classic. I thought 'The Office' was alright, not something I could watch quite so easily. It had a really crappy ending.

Nobody has mentioned any Jimmy Perry/David Croft things (myself included). Consider 'Dad's Army' very high up my list...

I never really watched that many of the Monty Python tv shows, but the ones i saw were great. The Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life are great movies.

I love "Last of the Summer Wine". "Keeping Up Appearances" is very funny at times too. (edit) Oh wait, another Rowan Atkinson show, "Mr. Bean". Hilarious!

Monty never clicked with me... actually I don't recall it ever really being on in our house that often, the ones that I saw were just unbelievably unfunny to the point where I always assumed it wasn't supposed to be a comedy and I've never really changed my opinion of it. That said, it's always seemed to find more favour with Americans than the Brits.

As for The Office, I think it's truly appalling... I figure it must be for people that work in that kind of office, 'cos it flies right over my head in the comedy stakes... but then, my industry was immortilised in 'Attachments' so there you go.  :p

Still say Blackadder 2 followed by Blackadder The Third. The Blackadder really wasn't very good, and his character had been toned down a tad too much in Blackadder Goes Forth!

Green Wing, I like too... and Father Ted when I'm in the mood.

Gosh, all Channel 4 and BBC 2.

(You mean to say that My Family & Vicar of Dibley aren't any good?)

    Oh c'mon...

    The Fast Show?

    League of Gentlemen?

    Drop the Dead Donkey?

    Never Mind the Buzzcocks?

Sure, I love a little Monty Python occasionally, but I'm with iGav on the office... drivel.

What about The Royal Family and Alan Partridge?

    Brass Eye?

For TV comedies I would go with:

    * Absolutely Fabulous
    * Have You Been Served?

I've got to go with Blackadder 3, as well as Are You Being Served. Red Dwarf is also a classic (well, at least the first couple of seasons are).

I'm also a fan of Doctor Who, which, though not a comedy, was a fantastic British Show!
