It was a complete hardware problem. Spent 3 days doing all sorts of tests and reinstalls and it still didn't fix the issues. It was DOA not because of whine or heat BTW.

Technically, they didn't exchange it. I had a DOA within the 2 week period which is eligible for a complete refund - BTO or not. They had authorized a brand new machine for me. All I did was cancel the replacement, take my refund and order the new one.
