I chatted with a sprint agent on sprint.com about this today. They seem to be aware of the problem.

Agent: May I know more details about your concern?
Customer: sure, first, I recently activated a new iphone
Customer: and the data speeds have been horribly slow
Agent: May I know the phone number or your account number to access your account?
Customer: is sprint aware of this?
Agent: May I know the model and make of your iphone?
Customer: iphone 4s
Customer: 32gb
Agent: I would like to inform you that this is the known issue and our Technical Support Team is working on this issue to get it resolved as soon as possible.
Customer: okay, is there an ETA?
Agent: I would like to inform you that there is no ETA.

I'm curious... what do you do to use that much data?

I can't download anything from the app store as it takes way too long

do you constantly use pandora or something?

i can't imagine email and websites taking very long at all

You talking about my usage? Well downloading apps and we pages , a lot YouTube and sometime Netflix, my data works great most of the times a few days I really had bad data but is normal now , right now latency is high for some reason but I got no problems playing YouTube or pandora at all , pandora I mostly use it at home tho and I'm working today

Just test it that speeds , here is what I'm getting today

My experience with Sprint so far here in Atlanta since launch day has been underwhelming to say the least. Getting speeds around 0.10 Mbps both at home and at work in downtown Atlanta with full signal.

I will give it until this weekend to see if things improve.

I wouldn't need this to be the "wow..this is pathetic Sprint" thread to know you're on sprint after seeing you say that those results are pretty good. I suppose they are getting faster since the day of launch.

That's not good by a long stretch.

I'm average nearly 3 times as much (steady 4.5-4.8) on AT&T on an IP4 in DFW.

For Sprint and EVDO those are very solid speeds. Hell that's what I usually get on AT&T 3G here in Columbus, OH (1-2 mbps), I wish I had these superfast AT&T speeds that some here get.

Those are pretty good speeds, IMHO. I'm also in Boston without an iPhone yet but don't have such speeds on my current Pre (in Beacon Hill and Brookline). More in the 300-600 kbps range. Just wondering what part of Boston you're in...

No problems whatsoever for me with Sprint in Los Angeles. Webpages load quickly and video streams effortlessly.

I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if there have been any updates since then. I'll be getting a Sprint iPhone 4S soon and wanted to know what to expect. Besides pain.

----------

I know realistically Sprint advertises a download of 600 kbps - 1.4 Mbps and an upload of 350 kbps - 500 kbps.

But, what I found interesting was that it drops to 400 kbps - 700 kbps and 50 kbps - 70 kbps when you're on 3G Roaming, and 50 kbps - 70 kbps down and up when you're just on the Nationwide Sprint Network.

I wonder if the phone is finding and locking on to another tower on the Nationwide Sprint Network rather than roaming on a 3G partner one. Maybe the PRL is out of whack? Trying to do Sprint 3G -> Sprint 2G -> Partner 3G -> Partner 2G?

It would have to be rearranged to be Sprint 3G -> Partner 3G -> Sprint 2G -> Partner 2G

Thanks. I've checked network.sprint.com recently and continue to check it every month or so. For my zipcode, 07110, I'm really close to the tower that had a Data Capacity Upgrade within the last 6 months. Nothing else planned for that tower. However, nearby towers did have a Data Capacity Upgrade and Data Speed Upgrade already. But I don't think I hit those towers because they're farther away.

I guess the question is, how do I update my preferred roaming list? Hrm...

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but you also pay the least with sprint and get unlimited data, albeit, slow...

You can have an iphone 4s on Sprint with everything you need for $60 total bill if you have corporate discounts and such.

When I was considering switching to another carrier, I was looking at $100 range... so I'm okay with losing out on data speeds to save almost $500 a year. I don't need fast speeds on my phone really... what I have now is good enough for my personal usage, but I can see why other's differ.

When I can't do the basics like stream videos or YouTube then it's not worth the unlimited data to me. I love sprint but with all the time I spend data and voice roaming I am about fed up.

Southern Oregon here (White City area) and I get fairly consistent speeds with Sprint. Siri is snappy and 90% of the time my web pages load just as fastly on my Sprin iPhone as when I was with AT&T. In all, it's been just fine for me. Most of what I do on my phone is web browsing while out and about, GPS etc and for those it's snappy enough.

My ONLY gripe is Sprint's terrible level of signal penetration. I'll get 5 bars outside a building and then once I get inside it will drop to 1-3. At home this isn't a problem with wifi and all, - but while shopping and trying to look things up or waiting in an office....

Overall I'm happy due to the great price point and perfectly fine service. For what it's worth, despite data seeming to eclipse voice for most people these days, - voice calls on Sprint are MUCH better, clearer and don't drop and I get more service than I ever did with AT&T.

Plus - and this isn't the reason I am with Sprint, but nevertheless is a nice bonus, when they come out with 4G iPhones (LTE!) I'll have unlimited data. Who knows if that will come to be any time soon, but it's nice to ponder.

I'd hate to keep posting on this big, old thread, but I found some information today. I called Sprint twice today and talked to their technical support and they mentioned that Wifi hotspots could be interfering with the 3G data speed. I personally don't believe it but the fact that two different tech support agents mentioned this to me makes me think that there could be a glimmer of merit to their statements.

Essentially what they're mentioning is what happened to Steve Jobs at the launch of the iPhone 4 at WWDC in 2010... Wi-Fi signals are creating a major slowdown on the data of the iPhone itself.

The iPhone prefers Wifi signal to a 3G or Cellular Data signal, so your iPhone wants to connect to a Wifi hotspot - even though it may be very, very low strength, despite the fact you may have full bars on your Cellular Data.

So, I'd like to ask that anyone on Sprint try to run a speed test of their choosing with their Wifi turned on (and not be connected to any networks), and then again with the Wifi turned off. Let's see if there's any truth to their statements.

I'm not sure, to be honest. I think it's just a script they're reading.

I guess that's why they give us a 14-day return policy! Worst case scenario, I'll be an AT&T customer with only 2 GB of data by the beginning of February. Best case scenario I'll be on Sprint and enjoy my unlimited data.

Thanks. This seems sensible and I guess confirms my initial thought that technical support really was just reading from a script. Well, here's hoping that I get decent speeds during my 14-day trial. What you posted is fine for my needs. What I'm concerned about are those 0.01 Mbps pictures from earlier on this thread.
