Surely this kind of thread has been posted before, but I wanted to start a new one, to see what you guys listen to now, and maybe get some ideas for CDs I should buy.

Right now I listen most of the time to The Hives, The Plan, Queens of the Stone Age, Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters and Lostprophets.

BWTAS was the first belle and sebastian album i ever heard. i bought it on cd and lp. it's one of my favorite records of all time, but it's not an early spring record for me. it's more of a late spring/summer thing (although the 'roller coaster ride' transcends seasons). i do like "sinister" better, but maybe it's just first album bias.

anyone hear the new sea and cake record yet?

also on my list of stuff to listen to now:
    11. Built to Spill "Live"
    12. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion "Plastic Fang"
    13. The Kinks "Everybody's in Showbusiness"
    14. Of Montreal "Singles and Songles..."

    Favorite music...

My first musical love is wave/alternative from the '80s, including Depeche Mode, Berlin, Missing Persons, Human League, Tears for Fears, Propaganda, Alphaville, etc. Best station for me back then was WLIR in the NYC/tristate area. It's since become much less edgy, but between '85 and '87 it was the best station on the radio for me.

In terms of rock/pop, I also dig metal, thrash, punk, industrial and gothic. I own CDs and LPs by Front 242, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, Nitzer Ebb, Stabbing Westward, Type O Negative, Front Line Assembly, and goodness I can't remember who else right off hand.

I also have secondary musical interests, something I prefer to call "space music" (as opposed to the term "new age"). My favorite artist in this genre is Patrick O'Hearn. I also enjoy John Serrie and the commercialistic Vangelis.

My third-level musical interest includes movie soundtracks and scores. I am particularly fond of T2, ID4, Superman II, and Return of the Jedi.

    Re: Favorite music...

Yeah, I remember going to great lengths to get it tuned in back then living just over the bridge in NJ. I loved all those audio samples they'd throw in between songs, little random sound bites from old movies and radio shows. The last time I was back in NY and tuned in, I think they were still playing the more popular end of their playlist from the late eighties.
Thanks for the memories, I got all kinds of High School flashbacks when you mentioned that.

    Re: My kind of thread

I can't say by any stretch that I like the Dead, but I am impressed! Have you listened to it all?

I terms of Belle & Sebastian, I stand by If You're feelign Sinister. It was my first B&S purchase and and consider it one of the top 10 albums in my collection of over 600 CDs. Arab Strap is also fabulous, I just think it works as a whole the way the Sinister does.

I left Radiohead off of my list, and this was purely oversight. I agree that all the albums are exellent, with Pablo Honey lagging a bit. OK Computer is another one of the those Top 10 CD's.

You ever listen to Tortoise? I've heard good things about Boards of Canada, but haven't yet tried them. The two are supposed to be similar. You know...weird, groovy, electronic inspired music.

that's some variety there!:D the mention of shuggie otis almost made me spit my coffee out. I've got an lp, an al kooper super session w/ shuggie otis from maybe '73? i hadn't heard of him since! good stuff.

BTW-tortoise/sea and cake/archer prewit/cocktails (read: all those chicago thrill jockey acts) are great IMHO. what's this zwan album like? i heard it's members of tortoise, papa m, and chavez playing with billy corgan. could that be right?
