you can post your genius app idea here, something that will make your life a bunch easier. or something that would be fun to use if made right. something a shareware developer would be able to do. if it is any good, it will be made. ok, if it is really really good.. you know the deal

I would love a good Cocoa based Verilog IDE, but it's certainly not an app with general appeal. I'd like to see an app that combines the functionality of Yade X and ffmpegX to rip DVDs -> PSP in one step (and work right every time).

Apparently there was a group that was trying to make an opensource gui interface overlay to OSX (kind of like front row), but designed for a touch-screen for use in cars. I think they've kind of fizzled on the idea since there was a lot of discussion in the early months of last year and lately not much. If something like this was ever done well I think there'd be a decent market for it.

The funny thing is that this existed. There were two companies, one shut down and the other one got bought by some "mysterious" company. That was almost a year ago...

Dashboard that is implanted into your brain :p But seriously, it would be very cool...you just think it and dashboard flies across your field of vision and you have sticky notes so you won't ever forget things, the weather, gas prices...:D

Ahh, didn't know there was a third one...

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple included something like this in the next iLife.
This and Front Row would make some nice additions to iLife.

I'd like an app that forces OSX to actually remember and retain my preference for what application opens a given file type.

No matter what "always open with" selecting, disk repairing, permissions repairing, cursing, or whatever, I do, I cannot get any mac in my home to consistently open jpegs with Photoshop and PDFs with Acrobat Pro.

Selecting a file, choosing Open with > Choose other, navigating to the app and selecting "always open with" works for that particular document, but by no means does it ensure such behavior for every other file of that type.

For the love of God, I just want to make sure that when I click on a jpeg or a freakin' PDF, they open with the correct app. Now and forever. Amen.

It's been this way since 10.0 and I hate it.

Sorry to post slightly off topic, but seriously, if there were an app or utility that made this happen with 100% reliability, I'd buy it. I've certainly paid enough in OSX upgrades hoping to make the problem go away...

Below that option in the info of every file there is a button to apply that setting to all files of the same file type. Try that. :)

Well, i've been searching for a good two hours now and for the sake of me i can't find a way to make a link to another post, so here is my brief list of ideas :)

iSync without .Mac between two connected Macs, but i think it should evolve step by step, the first synchronization could be Finder folders, then AddressBook, later Safari bookmarks, then iCal, Mail, iTunes, iPhoto...

Another idea is a bluetooth networker, that would allow me to share my internet connection with another bluetooth enabled Mac, or access files from the network menu...

Another (simplier) idea is to develop an app that changes the system volume according to the surrounding noise, like some Alpine auto-stereos used to do.

In the same direction, an screensaver that could only be deactivated by voice recognition.

In the security area, another idea i've have is an app that would ask for your administrator password every once in a while, perhaps every two days or something not-so annoying, for those users who use their Mac in Automatic Login fashion or for those that never shutdown it, i know there used to be a similar app for the Palm platform and i loved it.

Another security idea could be an app that would start an alarm or scream really loud upon waking up in case anybody moved your Mac while in sleep mode...

In the movement sensor area, it would be awesome to develop a virtual joystick that could work by actually moving the whole Mac (it would be useful mainly for laptops).

Another idea i have is to have a force-feedback simulator that could be developed by spinning up both the cd and the hard drive while emitting low frequency tones from the speakers, it could be useful for those times when you can't use sound nor visuals(while giving a lecture, for example) but the system needs to alert you. (an example could be an iCal alarm, or an incoming call in your bluetooth phone stored in your backpack, etc.)

In the sound area, a ultrasonic emitter could be useful if you're using your 'book in a mosquito-infested area.

In the mosquito-infested theme, i could definitely use a menu bar icon scroller for all those menu items that get too crowded in my 12" screen.

Another way to save menu space in the 12", could be an app that would monitor the system and light up the numlock led (or the sleep light in the 'books) whenever some condition happens, being it a new mail, an unanswered adium message, extreme temperature in any sensor, SMART alert, low battery, iCal alarm, low/lost airport signal, it could be made to have up to three conditions with slow blink, fast blink or fully lighted.

In the temperature area, an app that would let you define the temperature at which the fan starts would be warm-welcomed i think (but obviously would need a full disclaimer).

Another app i can think of is a screen low brightness fine-adjuster, because i find that sometimes the lowest lighted setting for my iBook is still too bright, for example to read in the bed with your beloved one by your side trying to sleep.

A very useful one would be an auto scroller for those times when you are reading for example a very long post in Safari (like this one! ), or a long text in textedit and you don't want to click every few seconds, it could be activated by looking if the window below the mouse has a scrollbar, and if it haves, defining a scroll startup delay and a scroll rate (it could be made even better by defining the scroll speed depending on both the distance from the mouse to the title of the window and the size of the font).

Another useful app for us 'book owners would be one that would allow us to use the trackpad as an alternate input device like the wacom tablets by pressing a control key or while using an external mouse.

These are only some of the most basic ideas for new apps, please don't get me started! And of course all this ideas are free both like in beer as in speech, but a nice mention somewhere deep in the documentation would be most welcomed.

As someone used to say: "live long and prosper".

As for iVideo, something definetly needs to come out because videos are used both in iTunes and iPhoto, sort of just thrown in haphazardly. It really isn't well integrated and makes it difficult to track videos. I mean if my iPod could sync with iTunes + iPhoto like it does now, but instead of using iTunes crappy Video thing use a seperate program, lets just say there would be a coconut in my future.

    Genius addon to app:
For Automater: make it so that you can point and click in real time and the Automater mimics your acts, so instead of just making workflows, you could even create actions, simply, intiuivtely, and quite quick I may add though.

    Now for that genius app:
A note program that allows me to intuitvetly (word of the day) take notes, voice recording / clipping < somewhat like MS word, but PLUS add support for pictures sort of like OmniGrapher and a more spatiac outline instead of lines. It would also have to have like a inivisble net so to speak of a way to connect ideas so that it could retain flow even through random bits of notes. Defiently a must for any student who is driven mad by differences between paper and MS word.

i agree with you, but now itunes is going video full throttle. and they will undoubtedly fix up thier video handling. (i hope)
i agree that would be cool, but unfortunately, automator runs on applescript, and applescript doesn't work that way. would be clever tho..
    like this?

An appliction that thumbnails images, allows you to group them, sort by Spotlight comments, and mass edit them.

I'd PAY for a program like that. It's so annoying having to tag my images. (Again!) This is even with automator scripts.

I don't understand, wouldn't you still have to tag them to make this work? What data were you interested in?

Yeah, you'd have to tag them the first time but you'd be able to group as many together and tag them at once. It's a bit annoying sorting first time tagging, replacing, sorting, and tagging again. I can do it using some smart folders and automator. I might just try that since it gave me an idea. Still, an application would be nice.

Maybe this is already easily do-able, but what I would like is something that manages a flash drive's contents loosely in the way iTunes manages the music on an iPod.

What you would do is drag files to the flash drive, and this would create a persistent association between the file on the computer and the one on the flash drive, so that whenever the flash drive mounted, the older copy would be replaced by the newer copy. So that your computer and flash drive's contents would always be synchronized. And perhaps also set it up so that any files that are on there that aren't on the computer at the time of mount get copied into a set "incoming folder."

I don't personally use or own one, but they're becoming more and more common here, and so I was wondering. Can anyone enlighten me as to whether this is already easily doable on Tiger?
