So now I have four 1gb modules to add to the stock pair of 512s in my Mac Pro. What would be the best way to install this odd combination (for a total of 5gb) with maximum performance?

All 4 1gb sticks on Slots 1&2 on Riser A&B.

2x512MB sticks on Slots 3&4 on Riser A.

I think that the placement of RAM has been covered many times in numerous threads. Please do a search in the future.

Searching for "Mac Pro Ram" finds exactly nothing of satisfactory value related to my specific situation of 4x1GB and 2x512MB after 3 pages of results. I don't go farther than that... but at 242 posts I'm sure your qualified to make that suggestion. Thanks.

I apologize if i have offended you but there have been many threads about the installation of 4 similar sized sticks of ram + 2x512mb sticks of ram which, even though may not be specific to your case of 4x1gb sticks of ram, can still be used as a guideline. Again, i apologize. And it's you're, not your.

    Edit:
From a search on the forums using the keywords "mac pro ram", on page 3, i found 2 helpful threads
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=310864&highlight=mac+pro+ram
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=303228&highlight=mac+pro+ram

and from the second thread, a very helpful diagram

"Helpful" and "the simple answer to a simple question" are two different things. And I didn't see that diagram. So sue me.

And it's I, not i. "Similar" should have been "similarly," or the sentence could have been re-written to say "similar sizes of RAM." "RAM" is an acronym and should be capitalized. You also missed a comma in there, but I'll let you figure out where.

For the record, I'm not offended. I don't get personally offended by text on a screen.

Cheers. Good luck with the upgrade. Make sure you seat the RAM modules properly, making sure that they are installed "tightly". Some (or most) cases of undetected RAM comes from not seating them correctly.

Exact same cofiguration I have - just install and enjoy - as a practical matter I do not think it makes a difference. I left the 512 modules in place and plugged the new ones in per the instructions.

In theory - the putting the 1 GB modules in the first slots and moving the 512s to the last populated slots would be best - but I would not waste the time sweating it.

    Great machine!
