Now that's a lot of money.

You'll get about $809 million if you choose to cash it all out.

I agree with the bolded. People that spend hundreds towards the lottery seem to never win. It's always the ones that buy a couple or several tickets that win. I personally buy $20 worth when the jackpot is high.

I bought $20 yesterday. Think I 'won' $8 (have 2 lines with one number and the PB), I'll roll that to the next drawing.

    Exactly what I did yesterday.

At this point, the lottery goes from being a simple tax on people who are bad at math to a voluntary donation to the winner with a potentially huge upside.

might as well buy a few tickets when it is this high. Worst case scenario, I'm out a case of beer for the weekend. I shouldn't be drinking anyway.

I do love the logic of (some) lottery players. Jackpot is "only" $40 million or so: "Why bother, its not like its going to make a huge difference to my lifestyle.." Jackpot is almost a billion "Gotta get a ticket to win! it!"

I'm just a little curious about all these people to whom an extra $40 million (call it $10 or $15 million after taxes, etc.) really doesn't mean that much.

Anyone who wins a billion dollars in a lottery is going to be the center of a lot of (mostly unwanted) attention. Some guy who cashes in a mere $50 or $60 million ticket can probably disappear to a life a luxury, ease, and anonymity.

Call me socialist, but I'd rather have a lotto where 1000 people win a million dollars instead.

It's not socialist as people are buying their own tickets

That's why the only lottery game I blame regularly is the pick five. It starts at 75k and usually gets up to half a million before someone wins. Much better odds too. That being said, today is the first of three days of collecting for the work pool.

it may seem a lot but u forgot about how much u would get after tax etc..

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/janetno...powerball-jackpot-millions-more-than-in-2012/

It's allot of money, but then again a luck of the draw.... think about how much money u would waste on tickets just to get there. Probably still worth it..... but if u've already spent millions on lottery tickets and still haven't won, i'd be thinking twice. Although it goes up anyway, u'r loosing all that money.

You're not ready for either of those

How many tickets would you have to buy to guarantee getting the jackpot? Would the total come in less than this billion dollar jackpot?
    --- Post Merged, Jan 10, 2016 ---
If you were Donald trump, you'd probably whinge about the half billion you earned but didn't get.

After tax, it comes out to between $400 and $480 million. Less than half what's advertised. Lump sum in this case gets you shafted.

Best to take the 30-year payout.

Funny how stupid people don't understand that regardless of how big the jackpot is, their chance of winning is still the same - zero. Unconsciously and perpetually promoting "legal" government gambling programs.

Less of a chance of being one of those people who actually blow through their winnings In a few years and end up with nothing.

Agreed. 30 annual payments of 43.3 million is nothing to scoff at, plus gives you options to build on that, pre-tax. By the time you pull it out, you could earn more than what the lottery paid out.
