Remember way back, seemingly so many months ago, Apple released in Software Update version 10.2.8? Shortly after a large number of complaints began to surface about problems with Safari and the program Transparent Dock, and Apple pulled the update. I was unfortunate to download the upgrade before it was pulled, since I had my System Preferences set to check for new software daily.

I followed all the appropriate steps at the time, and now have the latest security updates. I have junked and reinstalled Safari a number of times. However Safari unexpectedly quits whenever I touch any key on the keyboard except the backspace and letter and number keys! I cannot tell you how long I have lived with this. I have always been confident in Apple's software updates and expected a fix. Finally after realizing how this effects my daily use of my computer, I am choosing to seek some of you out for help.

I can't tell you how much of an inconvienence it is to have Safari quit all the time. Whenever I touch the arrow keys it quits. When every I hit a key command it quits. The arrowkeys are the worst. If you misssplell something you have to grab the mouse and click in the right spot in order to use the delete key. If you arrow key anywhere in a document like I am writing now, Safari wil Quit. I had to rewrite this thing once and from then on had to do a copy every paragraph or so. I have put up with this for so long that its becoming second nature to not even get close to these evil keys. I have searched the entire web, Apple Support, and countless forums for any help and I am finally at the point of wanting to ask you folks for help. The only solution I have come close to seeing was a blip about ugrading to Panther is the only way to remedy the bad 10.2.8 update, but it was not specific to my continued problems with Safari that were not solved after Apple re-released the update. I am not saying that Panther would be a difficult solution, it's just that the problem should be able to be solved in another way.

I guess you have tried to delete Safari and reinstall it.

Are there any messages logged at the time of the crash in the console.log or system.log (In panther you'll find these in Applications->Tools->Console. If the Consule utility doesn't exist in Jaguar, you'll have to look for the logs in /Library/Logs/Console/<username>/console.log and in /var/log/system.log)

Also look for a Safari crash log which would be in your home folder/Library/Logs/CrashReporter

In my eyes, Safari will always be a beta browser.

Careful, now, Apple released two versions of 10.2.8: One that was pulled (which I also downloaded & installed...ran fine), and then the sub-1MB update that sped up Finder window resizing. Have you tried updating your copy of OS X to that second 10.2.8?

Also, what model machine do you have? If it's a desktop, are you using an Apple-branded keyboard? How much RAM do you have installed? Have you installed/used any haxies or semi-(or not) reliable 3rd-party programs? I think something you installed went way down south on you, prob. a beta program, and I'm thinking that the 10.2.8 update conflicted with the unresolved bugs of the program. So if that's the case, then you might want to consider upgrading to Panther (unless you are willing to use another browser, which won't have the keyboard problem).
