How does it look when doing so, if the resolution is higher than the native. For example, if the monitor resolution is 1650x1050.

In spanning mode you can run different resolutions on the internal and external screens. So it looks normal.
mbp 13 supports a resolution of upto 2650x*** on external displays, it looks fine. I have had much better experience through HDMI than DIV though.
