Does anyone know if the 17" (and the coming 15") Powerbook drives will be customer-installable parts? I'd like one of the 5400 RPM drives down the road.

based on discussions with mac geniuses at various apple stores, it appears that the HD on both the new 12" and 17" powerbooks are NOT customer installable parts (as they have been since the age of the dinosaurs). And in fact, there is no way to remove the airport extreme card on the 17" model without voiding the warranty and dismantelling the whole thing. A few have taken their entire 12" powerbooks apart to get at the HD (nearly as involving as an ibook), and that voids the warranty. I dont know why they did this, since they are pro machines, but it sure is a pain for those of us who wanted to install the upcoming 80gb HDs.

You'd think they'd make it installable, huh?

Then again, maybe not. Maybe Apple just wants you to buy another PB once you've reached a point in your career when you realize that 60GBs not going to do it for you.

Well, best of luck. Hope they come out with a good 120-200GBs in the next couple of years. That would be great.
