Since 18.1 most likely won’t come out until a month or two after ios18 publically releases in September with the new iPhones, will those of us using the 18.1 developer beta need to wait until 18.1 to launch to get off the beta (or manually downgrade to a still signed 17 or 18)?

Possibly, but maybe Apple is rolling out the 18.1 betas now so that they can release 18.1 shortly after 18.0, or maybe 18.0 will be released earlier than usual and 18.1 is the one that will drop alongside the new iPhones (can't take credit for this idea, I heard it on a podcast). Nobody outside Apple really knows.

You should certainly be prepared to wait for the 18.1 release, though.

Isn’t what you describe the only way to get off any beta?

I personally believe that 18.1 is just a fork and AI capable devices will get it in September and non AI will get 18. Releasing in the fall is generally how Apple describes their September releases.

We'll see if 18.1 gets updated at the same frequency as 18, they currently seem to have the same bugs, e.g. the recent emoji's not updating.

The only reason they have 18.1 betas is cause AI is now launching later this year and not with 18.0. Everyone gets 18.0 in September, everyone gets 18.1 later this year.

Up to you to decide if you want to get off the beta train in September or 1-2 months later.
