iPod 1G Nano doesn't work unless connected to computer?

The 1gb nano powers on and works fine when connected to itunes on a pc. The menu comes on and shows the colored screen but does not go to the menu.

Does anyone know what the problem is? I can buy it for $12, and perhaps a hard reset would fix it?

sounds like it wont work unless it has a external power source.

Meaning...battery is dead/wont hold charge.

i bought his kit for my brother's gen 3 ipod, tools worked perfect, no scratches, and his ipod works perfect now

I was about to buy it from the guy when he mentioned that he had opened it up to replace the cracked screen....

so I think it's a hardware problem and decided not to bother withit.
