I wonder if this woman knows these people?

In any case, this is infuriating. Damn straight they should close the loophole that allows this -- although I wonder about that $1000 part. A thousand bucks ain't gonna make anyone independently wealthy.

I'm all for government aid for the disadvantaged, but my sympathy goes only so far. You can buy a house in Michigan, and a car, and eat very well with a half-million bucks.

This woman needs a really good smack upside the head.

The fact that she was even playing the lottery while taking tax dollars to feed her family infuriates me...

This is what's wrong with American education, no clue about consequences whatsoever.

Why are people who own two houses allowed to take food aid? Sell a ****ing house. In fact there are plenty of people who rent and don't own a house at all (including myself who continually funds these programs every year), sell both of them.

    For what?

    Taking advantage of a loophole?

I would think it's the government that needs a smack, for allowing the loophole.

I watched an interview with this lady and the fact that she says she is entitled to the assistance pisses me off. She also claims she is still struggling. How are you still struggling if you won at least half a million. (I know she won a million but taxes and the lump sum would decrease it enormously) The government really needs to redo the whole assistance thing, in every aspect.

This is the problem with any system there are always loopholes.:(

As the article says what she is doing is not illegal.

Same as just about anyone else who's struggling - she spent all of her money, and has no income.

She's 24 years old and doesn't work. I didn't see that the article said she can't work, only that she doesn't. So of course she doesn't have income.

What she does have, however, is a hell of a lot of asset capital. Like Zombie Acorn says, sell one of your houses. Go get a job. She's in much better shape than most people and she doesn't even realize it.

This is why socialistic programs fail in capitalist society. The government is charged with nailing down the welcome mat so someone doesn't steal it.

I don't see how you could be so careless with your money. I know the lady bought a house but still, how do you go through 500k that fast? If I won 500k I would pay off student loans and future college payments and then invest the rest. It amazes me how people blow money.

And she could go get a job if she wanted one.

I agree, except, I think that I am willing to tolerate the rare moron who wins a lottery taking advantage of the system so that other people who really need the assistance don't end up starving.

Personally, I think we should focus our efforts and our distate for the socialistic programs that provide financial support to corporations that are profitable. The big oil subsidies and the money we pay delinquent military contractors, and the money they have squandered and lost and stolen in Iraq/Afghanistan dwarf the paltry sums this woman is using to eat.

I completely agree. What the woman doesn't realize is that she did invest the money - in a house. And it sounds to me like it's time for her to sell it, because if she's out of money she clearly can't afford it (taxes, utilities, upkeep, etc.).

You won't get any argument from me on big business cashing in. I am just as much against that as situations like these. Although it is only one person gaming the system it breeds ill ideas about the programs and their fairness. A typical person sees this and thinks either "the system is being gamed by everyone" or " she got hers so I should get mine too". Many people don't even make the connection that their neighbors are paying for these programs, its "government" money so I should take as much as possible.

Even here some people think its "free healthcare". I almost wanted to give some random a round of applause at tim Horton's when a lady was talking about how healthcare was free and another lady blurted out "No, we pay for that through taxes".

This situation should never be allowed to exist, so I am all in favor of closing loopholes, but people like this shouldn't be trying to double dip and scam the system either. There is no way in hell I would continue on food assistance if I won a million bucks. To do otherwise is shameful.

It depends where you live, 500k would buy you a small dump here by my housing standards. I'd need 800k just to buy a reasonable sized house.

I looked up Lincoln Park. It's a small bedroom community, median household income $22k. Houses can't be that expensive there. Especially in a down market in Michigan.

You'd think that, but by the time laws get through the sausage-making process, with every special interest carving out an exception for itself, is it any surprise that there are loopholes like this? At least they've resolved to fix it.

What about that woman? Was she going to give up the assistance voluntarily? Whatever happened to that vaunted concept of personal responsibility?

This is the main point. If that's in her blood then it's no surprise she expects the government to pay the bills on her $500k house.

In her blood? As in, a genetic predisposition?

What, you can't stop at "She's a rotten person for doing this?"

Many (but not all) people on public assistance are receiving it at least in part because they made poor decisions with their money. That faulty decision making doesn't stop when someone wins a lot of money -- they simply keep spending until theres nothing left. I fully expect this woman to be back on public assistance after she's burned through her winnings.
