Hey all,

Looking to hear from those who went from the 1st gen 12.9 (I guess 2nd gen too) and now opted for the 11in.

How has your experience been? Are you considering returning to go back to a 12.9? Looking for some input as I’m leaning towards the 11” after 2 1/2 years with a 12.9. Believe it’s a perfect balance when not using my 13” MPB-Ultrawide combo.

Thoughts?
Thanks to all who contribute

I'm thinking of doing that too, so I'd like to know people's thoughts. I like the 12.9, but it is an awkward size! Any artists downsized? What do you think?

Most artists I know and those on YouTube seem to go for the 12.9”. I can understand that. But as an artist who travels a lot, I am definitely going for the 11” iPad Pro. The new 12.9” is like an A4 sketchbook, while the 11” is a little larger than an A5 sketchbook - which is my go to travel sketchbook size.

I went from a launch day-purchased first gen 12.9 to an 11" and I'm not missing the size really at all - on rare occasions I don't quite like the way websites render in portrait as they aren't always desktop version until I flip to landscape, though those seem to be responsive sites. However, everything else about it is fantastic! I actually have gone from a combo of a 12.9 and a maxed-out 2017 15" MBP to just the 11" iPP as my wife has requisitioned the laptop as an upgrade from her 2013 MBP (and maintained that I didn't need a laptop, which is true when I actually think about my non-work computer usage).

So I'm shrinking down and making the attempt to go iPad only, so far I've got no downsides and I'm not missing my 12.9 at all - despite the fact that I was initially going to go with the new 12.9 base wifi (but I'm preferring the 256 GB 11).

I’ve come from the second gen 12.9 IPP to the 11” IPP 2018. Loving the portability and the form factor, not missing the wieldy iPad at all. Note: I’m not an artist, I use the iPad as a companion device, mainly for media consumption etc.

I’m in two minds. I currently have both 2017 models but I’m contemplating switching to just a single device. I much prefer the smaller Pro for travel or casual use but I love the bigger Pro for more serious work at home and media consumption. Planning on checking them both instore this weekend before making a call. I do need to swap out my 10.5 though due to the white spot issue so at a minimum am likely to pick up a new 11 unless I feel the new 12.9 device is small enough for travel and casual use.

Even with the shrunken footprint of the 12.9, I pulled the trigger on the 11” 256 LTE through Tmobile.

Using the 12.9 1st gen daily, I’m sure it’ll be an adjustment the first week, but feel for my needs (portability, media, web/email, and photo editing) the 11” should hit the spot.

Hope to hear from more who went from 12.9 to the 11.

I went from the 2015 12.9 to the new 12.9. Love it. Glad I dropped the cash. Much faster. Better colors. Much smaller. Did I NEED a new one, no. My 2015 12.9 is still a beast, but I’m very happy I upgraded

Being a Pro 12.9 user..trust me, stick with the Pro 12.9. You won’t be disappointed.

I have the original 12.9" and then the second the 9.7" came out, I bought that because it was easier to tote around. I kept the 12.9" as my "couch drawing / magazine reading" type device around the house, but took the 9.7" everywhere with me.

The 11" for me is a happy medium where I can consolidate back to one device and only sacrifice a small bit of drawing room. I'm only a hobbyist anyway, but it's nice to have the 11" in close to the form factor of the 9.7".

I just got back from the Apple store after swapping my 11” iPad Pro for the 12.9”.

I had initially upgraded my gen 1 12.9” to the 11” but in using it for the past 5ish days, it just felt too darn small in comparison.

No way I’d be happy downsizing to 11”. I’m even annoyed that Ives decided to take away some pixels by rounding the corners of the LCD screen.

I had the 1st and 2nd gen 12.9 and got my 11 last week and love it. As has already been said in this thread, the only thing that I find as a mild annoyance is that while using the iPad in portrait orientation, there are some websites that load an “expanded mobile” version rather than a desktop version of the site (MR included). Having a device that is more comfortable to use one handed has more than made up for that one annoyance.

Saved me $20 on the keyboard too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I wasn't expecting my new 11" to fully replace the 12.9" and it didn't. The screen is definitely too small in my opinion for note taking and I will stick to the 12.9" for that. Media consumption generally seems okay on both iPads, but so far it was a mix bag on the 11" because most apps are un-optimized to take up the whole screen, so I keep coming back and forth between the two. One thing I liked about the 11" was that it feels better to be used in the portrait orientation, for browsing forums and book/magazine reading, which was uneasy and awkward with the 12.9".

No matter how I tried to convince myself while playing with both sizes at the Apple Store, I still went back to the 12.9”. After using the 1st gen 12.9 since it’s launch, I just couldn’t go smaller. The 11” felt cramped to me and with my aging eyes, it’s harder to read at a certain distance without it feeling small...the 12.9 is perfect for me.

I am also a musician and the bigger size is a must for viewing sheet music.

Now, I like how the 11 is easier to hold but with its sligtly reduced size, the 12.9 is a little better to handle now.
