I recently acquired my girlfriend's old MacBook (a 2011 15" MBP) after she got a new one and gave it some upgrades - I put in a 250 GB SSD and increased the RAM to 8 gb. All was well for a few months - no problems and the computer ran like a dream. I was actually seriously impressed with how fast it was.
Fast forward to this past month - the computer has now begun entering random kernel panics where the screen will freeze with some random colorful array and restart by itself. Sometimes I can use the computer for hours before this happens, other times it happens after just a few minutes.
Sometimes after this happens I can't start the computer for awhile - it'll make the DVD drive check sound and the sleep light will illuminate but the screen will remain blank.
I've tried:Resetting PRAM, a fresh macOS install, resetting SMC, running Mac Hardware Troubleshooting Utility, and finally wiping the hard drive completely and fresh installing macOS. After the wipe and fresh install the system seemed to be running better (faster and more stable) but then suddenly froze after a few hours and wouldn't boot for about 20 mins.
I'm actually typing this from the aforementioned MacBook right now - but I'm guessing it's going to freeze up on me soon. Any suggestions? Guessing this might be a fatal hardware issue?
