I have been considering buying a 2013 Mac Pro. I was exploring upgrade options and it seems as though the only resource for the proprietary SSD upgrade is through OWC? If this is not correct, please let me know. This obviously poses a price bottleneck with regards to this machine unlike prior intel Mac pros or newer models. Too bad ...

Not true.

You can install any blade SSD offered in Apple machines from around 2013 - 2015. These can be found on eBay, facebook marketplace, craigslist, etc.

Or, you can also use an adapter and use just about any off-the-shelf NVMe blade SSD as long as your OS and firmware supports booting from said device (can't remember off the top of my head when Apple started supporting this).

Be warned, however, that the only way to update your firmware is to have a genuine Apple SSD installed. So if you decide to go the NVMe route, make sure you hang onto your original drive for future updates.
