Nokia and Apple announced today that they have settled all litigation related to their intellectual property dispute and agreed a multi-year patent license.

Under the collaborative agreement, Nokia said it will provide "certain network infrastructure products and services" to Apple. In turn, Apple agreed to return all health products owned by the Finnish company to Apple retail and online stores.

"This is a meaningful agreement between Nokia and Apple," said Maria Varsellona, Chief Legal Officer at Nokia, responsible for Nokia's patent licensing business. "It moves our relationship with Apple from being adversaries in court to business partners working for the benefit of our customers."
In December of last year, Nokia filed multiple complaints against Apple in several countries, accusing the Cupertino company of infringing several of its patents. In response, Apple sued Nokia in an antitrust lawsuit against several patent assertion entities which it claimed were trying to collect excessive fees for Nokia patents. Apple had established FRAND (Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory) deals with Nokia, but by transferring patents to patent holding companies, additional royalties can be demanded.

Just days after the legal dispute flared up, Apple pulled all Withings-branded, Nokia-owned accessories from its online and retail stores around the world. Nokia stood its ground, however, claiming that it had not been able to reach a licensing agreement with Apple and therefore had to defend its rights.

Following the latest development, Nokia will receive an up-front cash payment from Apple with additional revenues forthcoming. The figure remains undisclosed, but net sales in Nokia patent licensing will reflect the value of the agreement, while Nokia expects related revenues to be reflected in the second quarter of 2017. No other details of the terms of the agreement have been released.

"We are pleased with this resolution of our dispute and we look forward to expanding our business relationship with Nokia," said Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating officer.

Refreshing to hear that not all IP and/or licensing disputes have to become protracted legal wranglings that drag on for years and years.

Although unavoidable in some instances, they often seem such a colossal waist of time, energy and money.

Agreed. It's a lot of invested resources and monetary expenses over issues that prolong for an inordinate amount of time. And the fact that Apple has rectified the situation with a pay out, at least they can move forward with Nokia.

Nokia used to be a great company with many great bits of R&D and phone hardware. But they are no longer that company anymore, that they came to a FRAND and agreement with apple shows that Nokia were trolling apple in not allowing a deal to be done before trying to call the bluff with a lawsuit. Unfortunately Nokia are now a patent troll looking to bend back fingers for as much dough as possible. Apple isn't squeaky clean either, they're all crooks but Nokia was playing a game here.

I'm sorry, what? You must be kidding, although the writing doesn't make it that obvious. Sarcasm is tricky.

Nokia is gathering speed after getting rid of Microsoft. It was a match not made in heaven.

5G will arrive soon, and Nokia is one of the biggest researcher in the area. I'm sure there's a lot of interest on Apples side for the tech. LTE, 3G and other GSM stack... Nokia has been and is even bigger contributor today to the wireless tech stack.

They just haven't been in the sexy gadget market in the recent years. Let's see what the future holds for Nokia.

It means Nokia is happy to be friendly with Apple again and not fighting anymore.
It is because there are no common rules for FRAND, how to value IP, and when parties don't agree, it's the courtroom who will decide. Because it will take a lot of time to get the case to the courtroom, a company must sue the other party in order to make "a reservation" if it is needed. Quite often the parties do settle like today, when they've been discussing.

So, as long as there are not common rules for FRAND, it takes time to make a settlement, and "a reservation" for the judge - just in case.

Nope not kidding Nokia was dumped by MS and stripped of everything it used to be.

You really need to educate yourself before commenting, The "Nokia dumped by MS" is a totally different company than this one mentioned here. MS bought the mobile division from Nokia, with Nokia retaining their networking and infrastructure devision and patents. MS basically bought the right to use the Nokia brand in mobile for x years, thats it. Nokia has a huge presence in these areas and is now re-entering the mobile arena again (after MS Nokia trademark expired)

What? You sound like one of the delusional folks who think that Microsoft's $150MM payment to Apple in '98 was an "investment" that saved the company.

Cook and the Boyz got their rear ends kicked by Nokia's lawyers.

Can you tell us anything about the terms of the settlement without violating an NDA or some other legal obligation you might have?

So this is a case where you posted a comment before you researched anything about the company. Am I right? It's evident you don't anything about Nokia and their back history.

Not to mention their advances in wireless technology and gaining momentum since Microsoft.
