Expercom Debuts Black Friday Sale on High-End Configurations of MacBook Pro and iMac

Apple premium reseller Expercom this week launched a few discounts on high-end build-to-order configurations of the iMac and MacBook Pro. All of these selections include models that have the best sale prices in comparison to the other Apple resellers, and many configurations aren't on sale anywhere else this week, allowing those planning on making a big purchase to save a bit of money on a new Apple computer this holiday.

The last one is 2017. The only one that is is wrong is the middle configuration, it is a 2015 not 2017.

Expercom is the best. They're local for me, and honestly I'd rather have them in town than an actual Apple store. The only downside is repairs that have to go back to Apple take a day or two longer.

Goes to show how much margins the resellers have.....given even MacMall and Adorama aren't close.

That 2016 13” is tempting. ESP with the 16gb and 512ssd.

Is that a pretty good deal?

They really are pretty great. I remember picking up the original iPad I launch day,might have been 3rd or 4th in a line of maybe 6 or 7 before all the folks that couldn’t get them at the Apple stores came by to pick one up.

Seems like you have to be a prior Expercom Retail Location customer to be able to place orders online. When I tried to add an iMac to my cart, it listed a number to call if you're a "new user", but the verbiage is vague. Does anyone have experience ordering online from Expercom?

The 2TB appears to be the 2016 version, so it's not necessarily a sign of large retailer margins. They might be marking it down below their cost to try and get rid of old stock. Apple might also have provided a monetary incentive to the retailer to help them clear out old inventory while protecting them from losing money.

The Skylake to Kaby Lake jump was a bit more significant than people expected, something like a 12% increase in multi-core for the top end CPUs and slightly better battery life. That's definitely NOT a big deal, just a little more than expected considering Intel's recent record.

Kaby Lake also has hardware support for 10-bit 4K HEVC, which (I believe) would be important to people working professionally with video content, as most content is going to HDR (10-bit) 4K now. Also, a big bonus if you want to watch 4K HDR content, as the on-chip decoder will be much better than any software/GPU solution.

Everything else should be identical. If you don't need on-CPU support for 4K HDR video, and you don't care about getting that last 10% in CPU speed, the fully loaded 2016 model at that price seems like a pretty great deal to me. Especially if you care about the 2TB SSD.

How on earth do they sell at these prices? In the UK, taking US sales tax into account and the fact that it's mid-2016 and not m2017, the $2600 (around £2131 at an average sales tax of 8%) 15" MBP is about £1600 cheaper than a m2017 (£3779!!!) model of the same spec. Even comparing Expercom m2017 MBP to Apple UK, the difference is £1200. Four years ago, the top-spec MBP used to go for about 40% less than it does now. We're lucky to see 10% off sales and they're no good because I can just education discount that amount!

It's frustrating how Apple jack up the £ price relative to the $ (unduly and disproportionately, might I add) and that there are never decent sales here. On top of that, they've cut education discount (14/10% --> 10/8%), and removed the 3-year free warranty that UK education customers used to get. I know that the rest of the EU experiences similar price differences. I love macOS because of things like iM, but these ridiculous discrepancies in price will just drive me to keep my hardware for longer, and potentially not upgrade it when I get so annoyed at my old, slow rMBP.

Apple education pricing is marginal at best. Business discounts are far steeper.

When I bought my MBP last November, 15”/2.9/460/1TB, it was $3815 after taxwith no discount, but $3100 after tax with my self-employed business discount. That’s a $700 discount from the mothership herself. My business team gal even threw in a handful of adapters. Education was only going to take $200 off, then you’re on your own.

The above pricing is better than the education discount.

Reseller margins are not very big. This is likely sponsored by Apple in part with kickbacks to the reseller so they can purge stock and buy more, newer, original-margined devices so Apple can report high sales next quarter.

Even when you buy cars, the dealer only makes a grand or two. Dealers are resellers. A BMW dealer buys BMWs direct, resells, and makes their money through incentives and service. The “incentives,” you see aren’t going to the consumer, but rather are corporate sponsored kickbacks to the dealer to compensate for potential losses.
