AppleInsider's Marko Zivkovic today shared a list of alleged identifiers for future Mac models, which should roll out over the next year or so.

The report does not reveal anything too surprising, but it does serve as further evidence that Apple is seemingly working on new models of every Mac, including the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro.

Apple is expected to release new MacBook Pro models with M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max chips later this year. Just like in 2024, the report suggests that updated Mac mini and iMac models with M5 chips could launch at the same time.

The next MacBook Air and Mac Studio models are expected to launch next year, and an updated Mac Pro desktop tower allegedly remains in development, but it is not entirely clear if it will be released later this year or next year.

No major design changes have been rumored for any of Apple's next Macs. Later next year, though, the MacBook Pro models with the M6, M6 Pro, and M6 Max chips are expected to feature OLED displays and a thinner design.

The chart below provides a summary of the identifiers, and the upcoming Mac models that they may correspond with, according to AppleInsider.

Interesting, that they will release an updated Mac Pro. It is really that profitable for them? I mean: for Apple?

Seems strange that the iMac code ends in 2 characters (ct) and all other Macs end in single character. Any thoughts on what the added "t" means?

While it seems abandoned with two-year-old tech, to cancel the Mac Pro would be to cede all high end compute to NVIDIA. Watching NVIDIA's stock price is probably enough incentive for Apple to keep pushing the high end.

From a marketing standpoint, I still think Apple needs the Mac Pro like a car company needs a halo flagship model (or a racing team).

From a legit compute standpoint, Apple needs the Mac Pro for 3D/360 video workflows, Personal/small corporate AI workflows, and other niche applications where the Mac Studio isn't enough and doesn't scale.

That said, I still don't understand why you can't load multiple M-Series daughter cards in a Mac Pro in order to create a render farm. I mean - you can put multiple high end NVIDIA cards in a PC, right? If they can't figure that out, then maybe multiple thunderbolt-connected Mac Studios is all we'll get.

We should note that all this is a bit of tea leaves reading by Appleinsider. Not saying they're wrong but my reading of their article they're triangulating from a few data points while assuming Apple will remain consistent with their historical internal identifier conventions.

That said, I would be surprised if the Mac Pro M2 is the end of the line for it. On the flip side, I would be surprised if Apple has two generations of Mac Pro under development simultaneously. My guess is that they will offer a Mac Pro M5 Ultra next spring but the Mac Pro won't get the M6 in 2026 or 2027.

So mac mini will be M4 and M5 Pro?

No M5 Mac Mini is a bit sad.

According to the linked AppleInsider story, "Though we saw no signs of a base M5 Mac mini, it's unlikely that Apple would introduce only a high-performance M5 Pro model of the device." This whole thing is speculation and tea-leaves-reading and not a roadmap released by Apple detailing what their actual real world plans are.

At least one research company (CIRP) claims the Mac Pro is the second-most popular desktop Mac at some 3% of all Mac shipments (iMac is 10% and Mac mini and Mac Studio are 1%).

No M5 Mac Mini is a bit sad.

If M5 is more expensive to manufacture, staying with M4 could allow Apple to keep the base mini at $599.

What revolutionary changes to them would you like to see?

How about thinner? With only TB5 ports? And a thinner keyboard where the two halves of each keyboard switch attach to a middle hinge. o_O

How about Face ID to start? I know they will never bring touchscreen but that is another one that would be amazing. While not revolutionary in terms of "never seen before", they would be revolutionary for a MacBook.

It also makes me wonder if they will make a version with the A18 chip that starts at $499 like the original Mac mini. $499 is almost an impulse buy.
