2G SIM in a 3G iPhone?

I have a quick question.

What would the result of buying an unlocked iPhone 3G from eBay, and putting the SIM card from my 2G iPhone? I know that I probably would not get the 3G functionality, but I would still get GPS, right?

My iPhone is getting a little beat up, and I want to replace it soon, but I also want GPS functionality. I don't want to renew a contract or go through the price raise of getting 3G service or anything like that.

Anybody have any ideas?

It should work. I used a non 3G sim in my iPhone after O2 didn't include a 3G sim when they sent to to me.
