do you rly want to know?
One of my friends got 3.0 off the internet(i have pirates for friends :p ) and he was wondering if upgrades are free if he did this. meaning if 3.0.1 or 3.1 were to roll by, he won't be requird to pay for the updates as itunes sees his ipod touch has 3.0 on it. btw, i like apple so i pay for my upgrades. :)

Well, from one point of view, i guess you could say that, but exactly how much sense does it make to keep the firmware free for iphone users but not for touch users. it is almost the same in functionality. Apple isn't being fair by giving it for free to iphone users but making us touch users pay up 10 bucks for features that are free for iphone users. If the iphone and the ipod were completely different devices, then this would make sense but the only difference is the phone part. I am not comparing apples to oranges here. im comparing macintosh to granny smith apples.
