I replaced a 2010 iMac with a 16" MBP, 1Tb ssd. It's only had about 450Gb filled on the drive... until recently, when I glanced at iStat Menus, and somehow it's up to 800Gb full. I haven't done any major downloads, and using Finder and DaisyDisk, can't see any files larger than 850Mb created in the last month.

Any suggestions as to what's going on? Things to check?

if using daisydisk already is that not showing where unexpected space is going? that's a quite big extra over what expecting. It could just be built up local time machine data?

I reran Daisy Disk (forgot about the "scan as admin") and found a 345Gb folder with the same name as my external backup drive, L Time Machine... which is also about 345Gb. So, moved into the trash via Daisy. But now in the trash, it says 0kb, has the red circle with a line indicating permissions are disallowed, AND refuses to let me delete it, even in safe mode. "The operation cannot be completed, because L Time Machine is in use."

Totally at a loss here.

Open Terminal and try deleting the file from there. You'll need to delete it using "sudo rm file name" enter your password and then press return.

also try temporarily disabling time machine. Not sure from sound of it if that's the local time machine, or system having got in a mess thinking external drive is attached when it isn't and backing up into folder under volumes?. Where was the folder?
