Should I order 32gb or 48gb ram if I will upgrade to 192gb myself from aftermarket ?

saw YouTube’s reviews that some ordered 48gb and then upgraded later. What’s the point to order 48gb if it’s totally cheaper in aftermarket? Are there same 12 ram slots for orders with 32gb or 48gb?

are you adding on or replacing? People order 48gb to fill 6 slots, and then add from there. Other people order 32gb, and ditch, and replace.

all macpro7,1's have 12 slots.

My plan is ordering the stock 32GB RAM (4x 8GB R-DIMMs). Then I intend to add additional 256GB of RAM consisting of 8x 32GB R-DIMMs, and thus filling all 12 RAM slots and access to all the 6 memory channels.

My Mac Pro 7,1 came with the lowest memory config of 32 GB ( 4 x 8GB ) . They are 8GB Hynix Part Number HMA81GR7CJR8N-WM and cost $70 each new on eBay .

That is Single Rank RAM. I thought Apple had always recommended Dual Rank.

Not necessarily . It can be all over the map . The rank positions used per memory slot are not as important as the total rank positions supported per bank . But the modules should still match .

For instance , with the Mac Pro 5,1 the vast majority of modules had 2 ranks . The bank of four memory slots ( per CPU ) supported a total of 8 rank positions . Thus , you could install two memory modules that had each a rank of 4 in this bank . The other two slots could not be used , though , as you just ran out of rank positions .

We don't know how many total rank positions the Mac Pro 7,1 will support , but it seems some of the 128 GB memory modules each have a total of 8 rank positions ( 2 x side x 4 rank = 8 ) .
