3gs jailbroken and UL with blackra1n on 3.1. Upgrade to 3.1.3?

Just got this phone and wondering if it is possible for me to upgrade to 3.1.3, as an app requires it. Obviously i would still want it jailbroken and rewuire it unlocked. I don't really know what im talking about here but cydia on the phone says it has shshs on file for 3.13, 4.0 and 4.01.

Would be very greatful for suggestions.

You can create a custom 4.0 ipsw with pwnage too and update to that JB firmware.
Then you can install ultrasnow from cydia to unlock.
You can go all the way up to 4.0 instead of 3.1.3 if you want.
Assuming you dont have a tethered JB where you need to run blackrain each time for your phone to boot.

If you need to restart your iphone does it restart on its on and boot up to the home screen or you need to run blackrain for it each time to start it up?

My phone froze earlier and I had to hold down the top button and the home button to turn it off. Is that a restart? If so, when I turned it back on again it tok a while to come back on, but it did so eventualy. I didnt open the blackra1n app, so unless it did so itself i'm guessing no?

Ok, then you dont have a tethered JB.
You got 2 options.
1. update to official 3.1.3 and then JB with spirit and unlock by installing ultrasnow from cydia. You will have to edit your hosts file for the firmware check to redirect to cydias server that has your 3.1.3 shshs.

Your JB apps will be all gone and you will have to install them again after.
For spirit you will need to activate your iphone with official simcard and since you dont have one you only other option would be to restore/update to custom 4.0 ipsw
You can unlock in both 3.1.3 and 4.0 by installing ultrasnow after you JB from cydia.
But since you cant get passed the activation process on 3.1.3 with spirit there's only one solution. option 2
All all other previous apps form the appstore will work with 4.0 btw.

I have a sim from the original provier (o2), it came with the phone, but I dont know if it is the actual sim that the phone originaly came with... any good?

I use a marine chartin app from navionics, which they say deffinately will not currently work with ios4...

Wow, thanks for all that. Before I have a look at it all, is there anything I should be doing beforehand - backing up or deleting. I thought I had read something about jailbreak apps just being taken up as dead memory if you don't do something to them? Also, how do you get cydia once restored?

You should do a backup thru iTunes.
Once u restore and activate the phone thru iTunes you run spirit to install cydia.

Hey, I noticed a couple of things from your links.

The spirit page says that it will only work with itunes previous to 9.2. I have the latest itunes installed. Can I get a previous version, and if so, will the fact that I have already synced with the latest one have an impact on spirit?

On the Spirit page it says that upgrading to 3.1.3 won't allow me to unlock again. Can 3.1.3 definately be unlocked?

Yes it can be unlocked on 3.1.3 and yes you will have to downgrade your iTunes to an older version.

Remove/uninstall iTunes. Then find an older version of iTunes online. Download and install that version.
