So I have a new-bootroom 3GS on running iOS 4.1 baseband 05.15.04 without the SHSH blobs for 5.0.1, and want to upgrade to 5.0.1. Now that there's a baseband downgrade, do I still have to stick the 6.15.00 iPad baseband on it, or is there someway to either keep my current baseband/downgrade to the preferred 05.13.04 and upgrade the firmware to 5.0.1?

Correct. Just make sure your 3GS is old enough to do this.

Yes you can downgrade the baseband, but you still need the hash and APTicket file to restore to 5.0.1
Without these files, you can only go to 4.1 (still signed by Apple) or current firmware

Why not just upgrade to current firmware (use No_BB IPSW if you need to preserve baseband for unlocking)

Don't have the 5.0.1 blobs so I assume I don't have the APTicket and hash. I'm holding off on the current firmware (5.1.1) because I afraid it will run to slow to be bearable, and because the consensus on a different forum is that 5.0.1 is the ideal fw for a 3GS in terms of the performance/feature tradeoff.

    I haven't seen but a few complaints of a 3GS on 5.1.1 being slow.

I've read otherwise on blogs and forums, especially about weird power issues like random reboots. Been looking for a solid video of it so I can see what it really runs like in an everyday setting but haven't found one so far.

I run 5.1.1 on my spare 3GS and it runs fine. The only place I noticed any noticeable lag was opening the notification center. But that's all contingent upon how many NC addons and tweaks you have installed. Just my 2 cents.

Edit: just make sure you restore as new.

And random reboots are due to either hardware failure, or failure to do a clean restore and/or restoring to backups.

OK, screw it, I'll try 5.1.1, but before I continue, I need to be a absolutely sure I can downgrade back to 4.1, for which I have the blobs.

Yes can downgrade to 4.1 as long as you have the blobs.

Go to iclarified for the tutorials, read up before starting.

Apple still signs 4.1 for 3GS so no hashes are ever needed to restore to it.
Just make sure your host file is pointed to Apple so iTunes can authenticate the restore.
