I have a 600MHz G3 iBook (dual USB) with a 20Gb hard drive (it's actually 18Gb, but who's counting?). Is it practical/possible to upgrade the HD? I need more space! Who can do it? I called my local Apple Store, and they said "we definitely don't do that."

Possible? Yes. Practical? I don't think so. Have you seen a dismantled iBook before?

I'd only do it if I had to.

there are laptop drives now that are 5400rpm 16mb cache and also 1 I have seen that is 7200rpm 8mb. I would much rather have the 7200rpm. when I went from my 5400 rpm drive to my 7200 booting up and opening apps all sped up a noticeable amount. the ibooks have 4200rpm drives so going to a 7200 would be a very noticeable boost is some areas of the system.

You can find some instructions here and here

Just be prepare to lose your warranty if you do it yourself, if you don't want to lose it, have a technician put it in.
