MacDailyNews notes that multiple iPad customers who placed pre-orders for Wi-Fi iPad models and are looking to change those orders to in-store pickup reservations have been told by Apple representatives that customer response to the iPad has been "so overwhelming" that newly-placed reservations made not be available on the launch day of April 3rd.
Multiple iPad buyers have been told that in order to do such a change, the delivery order would have to be cancelled and a new in-store pickup order completed, but that iPad orders (which began this morning at 8:30am EST) have been "so overwhelming" that new iPad orders may not be available for in-store pickup on April 3.
iPad pre-orders have reportedly been brisk and in-store pickup reservations are likely similarly strong. We've heard that one non-flagship store had already seen nearly 100 reservations for Wi-Fi iPads as of earlier this afternoon, divided roughly equally among the three capacities although weakest in the mid-level 32 GB model.

With approximately 220 U.S. retail stores, Apple may consequently have received on the order of 20,000 reservations in addition to the tens of thousands of pre-orders in the first six hours of availability. It is impossible, however, to extrapolate performance from a single data point with any real degree of accuracy, and so observers will undoubtedly continue to try to piece together various pieces of information to develop a picture of early iPad sales.

Alright lets do it.

Queue up conspiracy theorists who say this is merely Apple drumming excitement.

They aren't going to stop making them. You could actually wait for it a little bit. Oh wait these people can't do that. They live in an instant gratification society. On top of that, half of them want a discount or a handout.

oh gawd, already? I still can't decide if I really want one, I'm about 110% sure that I will be getting one, and I'm thinking 3g unless there's some iPhone hack to tether with. Prolly 64 GB too unless I decide to wait for a 128 version...

If you need to pick it up in store, this seems unfair to people who don't live near one. (This would include me; the nearest one is a two-hour drive away. This doesn't actually apply to me, since I didn't order an iPad, but I'm just sayin'...)

buy. buy now. buy fast. don't hesitate. just buy. buy buy buy. macrumors tells you to buy.

otherwise you might have to wait a day or two. that'd be unbearable.

why haven't you bought one yet. all you're friends gonna have one. you'll be so alone.

</sarcasm>

VPN/Back to my Mac

Will it be possible to remotely run a real Mac from the iPad? If I knew that I could get a hold of my primary computer anytime I wanted to that would help in making the decision to buy.

No, doesn't work that way. If you PRE-ORDER, you gave them your payment info and it will be shipped to you. If you RESERVE, you are giving your apply account info (not any monetary info) to apple with a specific store location that you intend to pick it up from. They will have a unit on hold for you until 3pm on April 3rd.

The article is saying that some people pre-ordered, not realizing that they could reserve online (which if you live close to a store is probably better then getting it shipped, or if you live somewhere without fedex weekend shipping). When the site went live at 830 this morning, i didn't even see the reserve online option. I noticed that about an hour later when I got my notification from apply via email about the iPad.

Some people want to change the pre-order to reserve, but they can't just do a swap. They would have to cancel the pre-order and initiate a reserve. Basically, they are currently in line to get it shipped to them for day1. To get in line for the 'reserved at store', they can't just take their ticket and switch lines, they would need to go to the back of the line for reserves, which may already be at the point that it cannot accept more people with assurance of the product.

Why is it every time that something new is available something has to be changed because it's ''so overwhelming''? Like seriously, could they just be ready for the worst?

Check out RemoteTap

Check out the RemoteTap app for the iPhone - I assume this will work just fine on the iPad.

I use it constantly to remotely access my Macs at home and work - works great via WiFi, and not too shabby even off of 3G.

Yeah, but only time will tell the truth.

Of course, if you had adequate supplies, you'd HAVE THE MONEY RIGHT NOW. That has all sorts of advantages financially that most people don't appreciate.

No, what they're doing is estimating conservatively, which means if they do run out, it won't be long until they get supplies in.

I never would have thunk this... eva.
I thought people bought apple products because they were awesome.
Apparently not.
The iPad is 'meh' not 'awesome'.
The iPhone is awesome, the mac pro is awesome, the 27inch imac is awesome, the 17" MBP is awesome and the (cracked)apple tv+airport extreme is awesome .
Everything else is 'meh'. That includes the ipad, ipods, small screen imac, mac mini and the magic mouse (i get some severe RSI from using it it's such a painful thing. I wonder how painful the ipad would be to use while laying down to type/read/multitouch ).

100 reservations by this time is good?

If an Apple Store had only secured a 100 reservations by now, either the iPad is a stinking failure or that is all they will have on opening day. 100 is hardly a number to crow about.

I'm not going to call you a troll because I don't think you are. But for some of us, this is our hobby. Some people collect stamps, some people collect cars. Some have to have the newest video game or comic book. This is my hobby. I love new technology; it's one of the passions in my life. I'm sure you have some too. I'm not going to question your values due to the things you love. Show me the same respect.

Well you are right on the money. This is sometimes my hobby too. And I love tech as well. Used to work for Apple, been around MR a long time. Not trying to disrespect you. But that said: with every iteration of a new device, etc, the bigger Apple gets, the more people end up on here which is why I don't spend too much time around here anymore, not like I used to. Without insulting anyone, there are a lot of ignorant, misinformed, and most likely kids on here who don't know much and post all sorts of really dumb things and questions, and have that new age worldwide sense of give it to me for free with everything on it entitlement that plagues our lazy society. They act like every little thing is the biggest. And they have absolutely no patience. So forgive me if the stench makes me a little ill. By no means did I mean to rain on your personal individual parade. Just wish the masses would gain a little perspective. People can call me a troll. But I'm not. And I'm not some over the hill Machead who is self-righteous. I just wish so many people weren't so damn stupid.

For the record I think the iPad is great. I want one, and may get one this year. But I don't buy anything I haven't seen in person.

I do every day.

And did you ever come to the conclusion that you are not Tyler Durden? Because you sound a lot like him in this thread. Go bother someone else. Nobody is forcing you to buy an iPad or preorder 30 seconds after it becomes available.

Oh, and you are not a beautiful snowflake.

i just smile at these netbook owners who either feel jealous of the iPad or feel dumb that they bought a netbook.
:D
