Haha - "this was an accident that could have happened anywhere"... great, you guys keep your "gun '''culture'''" for yourselves, thanks.

    Nevermind. Re-read the article.

Instead, I'll add personal experience. My father kept his sidearm nearby, but never on his body when off duty. Instances like this among others begin a prime reason.

might have been on his lunch hour, does it matter?

    ----------

not sure who that is , plenty of cops should NOT be armed

I especially like how it didn't seem to register with the shooter that anything had happened.

Like I said, and I'll get to it before you mention it, I re-read the article, and edited my post as such.

Back to your post. Lunch hour would still put him on duty, to be honest. As such, it would be a hard stretch to be with his wife at the time. Already tense enough from being on the job would be a bad time to have lunch with the wife and armed. Pretty safe to cross out lunch hour as being when this happened.

Probably because he was another responsible gun owner.

Why does a corrections officer need a gun? They don't carry them on duty in a prison.

I don't understand how someone's gun "accidentally" goes off. It's just an inanimate object, right?

Again, like the ex-cop in Glenwood, IA. Look at where being responsible got him.

Precisely. Even when my guns are unloaded the safety IS ALWAYS ON. Never, ever have I left it off. My rifle has an auto-safety feature...once loaded the safety is on by default. This guy was lucky he didn't blow his leg of or worse. feel sorry for the folks who got injured due to his stupidity though.

    Take his licence away.

This is the perfect example of why all guns should be banned.

And this was an ex-cop, who, like this corrections officer, should have known better, and should have known what gun responsibility entails.

Why is it weird to have lunch with your wife? That's common here.

Not saying that it's weird to have lunch with your wife; not at all.

But being the corrections officer, in a dangerous position, is intense throughout the day. Even the time it takes to decompress over lunch is tense, and that is the part I am getting at. You're going to be in that tense zone throughout the day until it's time to leave. Being with that with your wife with you is a bit… loss for words to describe it.

I'm also not saying that the wife couldn't help with that decompression; of course she can.. but it's just odd to do that over lunch when the officer would have to go right back into the thick of it.

Well, the people he has to deal with on a daily basis don't stay in Jail forever and some of those people are not known for being the nicest people around. I for one would not want his job.

The same way someone accidentally gets pregnant, excluding that one lady a long time ago. I think her name was Mary?

I am putting my money on an act of God.
