I think the OP is perplexed that the NY Times would publish such an acknowledgement of what they're historically loathe to admit.

Or maybe they don't want to be told the world is 6000 Years old and jesus is coming.
There is no such thing as perfect tolerance we all have our quirks.

Let me explain the problem to you, in terms you'll be able to understand:

Its very difficult to square an Evangelical Christian's sincere belief that the world was created by a white bearded old guy about six thousand years ago with, for instance, the fields of paleontology or cosmology.

Its difficult to reconcile conservative economic thinking about the sanctity of eternal tax cuts, with the empirical evidence of thirty five years of resulting budget deficits.

Google and Facebook tend to hire people who understand and believe in the science of digital computing devices. Don't be surprised if Universities hire and promote people who understand and believe in the principles of truth, science, and logic.

"I am the equivalent of someone who was gay in Mississippi in 1950”

Moronic and hyperbolic false-equivalence-persecution-complex statements like this will likely not get get you the job, either. Having read the article, it is clear why a bias exists and why worldviews based in bronze-age myth are underrepresented. The self-described "conservatives" and "Christians" do not appear to be in touch with reality in a field where objectivity is important.

Christians and conservatives on college campuses are not physically abused. They are not ostracized from every conceivable element of society. They are not beaten. They are not hung from trees. They are not socially disowned, relegated to the "ghettos", as homosexuals frequently were in the South (and everywhere) in 1950. The quote above might be the dumbest thing any of us reads all day.

I will say that the left and right seem to have started adopting each other's tactics here as of late. It'd almost be sweet, if it weren't so damn scary.

Anybody who doesn't share your beliefs or myopic view is an idiot according to both sides.

Believe it or not, my experience tells me that most of the world outside of MacRumors does NOT think someone is an idiot just for having different beliefs. Strange but true.

He's probably right, actually. To paraphrase something Chown33 once said to me, PRSI is made up of the always overly opinionated, ever argumentative pundits, with the occasional extremist thrown in for good measure. We're the loudest and most vicious here. It's not a good place to gauge the pulse of the average American in regards to his politics.

It depends on where you live, I guess.

One thing that always strikes me as funny is that some of my best friends are pretty hardcore Republicans. Hell, one of my oldest and bestest friends evar is pro-life open carry. On the flipside of that, one of the most smug and narcissistic SOBs I know, who I've come to greatly dislike over the years, is a pretty devout liberal.

What does that say about the attitudes of the left vs. the right? Not a damn thing. In the end, it all comes down to personality.

You should see the women's comments on those posts. They seem to have a big problem about it.

So much for Women and Children first.
