If I'm posing this question in the wrong forum, feel free to yell at me ......

I've decided it's time for me to be replacing my iPad AIR with an iPad Pro 10.5 ....... and as this will be my first 'upgrade' there are a couple of things I'm not completely sure of - any help will be appreciated.

1. The retailer I was thinking of getting the new iPad form told me that they will be able to 'clone' my Air onto the Pro 10.5 so that 'everything' will be copied across. Everything, including all my app data ( whether Apple apps or third-party apps ) he said. Now, I'm fairly new to Apple/iOS/iTunes but my understanding is that the process is not that straightforward or comprehensive ....... Can anyone confirm that 'cloning' is possible, or are my reservations valid ?

2. Sortof following on from that question - what is the difference ( in terms of what IS and what ISN'T included ) between

a) an iTunes backup locally to my Windows 10 machine ( currently running iTunes 12.6.2.20 - do I need to update to 12.7.1 ? )

and

b) an iTunes backup to iCloud

Any other hints / tips would be appreciated

Thanks ....

A backup to iCloud will only back up items that you have ticked on to do so and also depends on how much cloud storage capacity you have available. Otherwise, there really isn't any difference between a backup to the cloud vs. a backup to your computer using iTunes. The iCloud method is definitely a more seamless approach if you have the storage to do so. I do not have enough iCloud storage to back up my entire iPad so I always must connect to my computer every so often to keep backups current.

I am on my 3rd version of iPad. The migration is unbelievably simple. Backup your iPad to your PC using cable. No worry re cloud space. Go thru minimum setup on the new iPad. Plug into PC and do a restore.

Everything is there. Apps, icons, Safari favs, site password, photos, etc, etc.

I just wish Windows and Android worked so well.

Backup on iTunes, and when you get your new iPad and plug it in. It will prompt you to restore a backup. Its as simple as that. You don't need anyone to "clone" your iPad. Apple has iTunes set up just for this purpose.

As for iCloud backup, I've found that to be slow and never really performed as seamless and easy as iTunes, just my $.02
