A pleasant surprise (or "Why'd it take me a month to play music in the background?")

Perhaps its because I justified my 16gb purchase by insisting that I wouldn't use the iPad for music much (although I've sync'd 2-3gb) but it only occurred to me today that I should fire up the iPod App in the background while browsing. The speaker(s?) is surprisingly good, like a unibody MBP, and I'm a little pleased with myself but chagrined that it took me a month to try it.

I'm sure part is that I'm in the first of 7weeks away from my desktop (on which I listen to music in the background constantly) so my iPad usage has soared (have MBP for actual work, whipped it out for 15 min today).

I do feel (but have not yet measured) that the battery dies a bit faster, but the battery life is so great it's not a big concern.

It is nice to be able to play music in the background, looking forward to when Pandora and Slacker can do this. In the meantime, I've been using WunderRadio, PocketTunes, and Live365's own site to stream in the background via Safari. If I don't know what song they're playing, SoundHound's great for that. I don't have any music stored on the iPod since only 16 GB so streaming it is which suits me fine.

I have 6,951 songs loaded onto my 64GB.

I plug it into my car's auxiliary port with a retractable cord and listen to my music to and from work, and I browse facebook and what-not while waiting at red lights. My commute has never been more enjoyable. I even look forward to having to stop! No more fumbling around with CDs and jewel cases, which can be dangerous. :)

It happened that one of the first songs to play on my 'Top 100' playlist was the super modern/futurist IGY (Donald Fagen). Smiled to myself as they sang 'What a beautiful world it will be... What a glorious time to be free' on this futuristic device :)

Just before I got my iPad, I used my brother's for awhile. The speakers are what really blew me away. I've watched like 3/4ths of the movies I've watched on my iPad with no headphones because it's more comfortable for me, and the sound is still great.

Sound is fantastic, for music and movies alike. That's what I like to call goodness all around.

Really? It bugs me that there is not another speaker on the opposite side of the iPad. The volume is fine but I hate only hearing it on one side.
