How many people are there really who don't oppose gay marriage in and of itself but do oppose it because they are afraid that people will try to marry toasters of the non-Cylon variety, etc? I think this is a fictitious demographic.

Agreed. Dogs, toasters, children are dragged into the conversation when they run out of excuses to deny legal adults access to the same thing they have. It's really amazing that they take it all the way to inanimate objects though. They make themselves look even more ridiculous then they already did to begin with.

In future gay marriage threads just post this link...pretty unassailable logic right there.

Sadly, it can be an effective tactic. Many people think that Phyllis Schlafly style nonsense like paranoia over unisex bathrooms tanked the ERA (and in many ways tanked second wave feminism). But in that case, I think they got people honestly freaked out by the possibility (same with the "death panels"). I wonder that there are people silly enough to say, "Sure, let Steve and Ed get married, but next thing you know, Earl is going to want to marry his Keurig."

I had a tawdry fling with a Keurig, but my heart belongs to Jura.

Wow, it's so simple and so true. I've never seen it put in such a simple way so that anyone can understand it. Even those with an elementary education can probably understand that.

It all seems rather self evident, doesn't it?

Not horribly complex - adults, able to give consent - not really much of a threat to anyone...:)

Exactly. Makes perfect and total sense to me. The toaster defense is ridiculous.

You'd think so, but that defense HAS been used. On here, in fact...

Sadly, I know what you mean all too well. It's even gone as far as their animals and other ridiculous things. People will make up any excuse.
