Just purchased an Airport Extreme. I use Embarq DSL to hook to the Net. Ethernet cable works perfectly when plugged directly into macbook pro, but when plugged into airport extreme all I get is a blinking amber light.

Would appreciate any advice. Thanks much.

Did you power-cycle the modem/router/whatever they gave you to interface with the DSL after you plugged-in the AEX? Did you try plugging the laptop in via a cable to the AEX to do the initial setup?

Some devices (cable modems in my experience) memorize the MAC address of the device connected to them. Thus, if your device also does this, it has the MAC from your laptop and won't talk to the MAC on the AEX.

Try:
1) Power-off the AEX and modem/router/whatever.
2) Turn on the modem/router/whatever and let it start-up.
3) Turn on the AEX

Hopefully that will fix your issue. Also note that the blinking amber light can indicate other setup issues.
