As said above, the find my app is on the Mac, so you will be able to track your airtags from one.

However, the tech specs state that an iPhone, iPad or touch is required and I assume that this is for setup, so it looks like the OP is correct.
 
If you're solely depending on a Mac to find your lost stuff, you've missed the value of the AirTag vs something like Tile. Even if you could set them up, AirTags are not very precise beacons without UWB to find stuff.

If you have no intention of owning an iOS device, there are better locator solutions.
 
I can see it on the Find My screen on my mac, but it is pretty limited as to what I can do , I can track it for a while, then it moves out of range. I think with all the magic Apple claims, they could improve this product. The file I loaded is trying to find my dog's leash which is in the next room and the options, With that being where it is, leaves me very cold. I should have waited for the thing to be out a month or so before buying the airtag. I wonder if they will improve them or like other things, drop it.
