That's pretty weird to assume that because someone doesn't have an Apple Store nearby that they're "rural users", lol.

Howso? Apple puts stores in urban and growing suburban areas. Outside of that they are, by definition, exurban or rural and exurban people can go to the suburbs, whereas the rural users like cannot without a great deal of effort. Very logical.

The question is simple that nobody has been able to answer.

I have a damaged iPad covered under apple care. I need to have it replaced (and pay the deductible). Can Best Buy do this in store same day (like a real apple store) or not?

Why not just call your local best buy and find out and let everyone here know?

I haven't had to use Geek Squad since before they were bought out by Best Buy. All I can say is, Geek Squad was fantastic, operating their HQ out of what appeared to be a former 1950s auto dealership on Washington Avenue in Minneapolis, their front car lot filled with VWs, Renaults, Peugeots, Morris, Mercedes Pontons, and all sorts of vehicular exotica. They were lightning fast and very competent, and damned cheap considering they got you back up and running in quick order.

I'll wait for a report here regarding the effectiveness or lack therof of such a service.

Upfront it sounds great, though!

EDIT:
Just spoke with my local Best Buy.

Here they do not do repairs in-house for the Mac models I mentioned (2011, 2012 MBPs with display issues).

They'd have to send them out to a repair facility in a different state.

The diagnostic charge alone is $85. That said, I don't know if that is included in the cost of repairs (I believe it is) but they're were trying to get me off the phone as quickly as possible so I failed to ask.

Thus, I scheduled an appointment with the Genius Bar instead...

The closest Best Buy to my rural area is the same distance as the closest Apple store.

With all due respect, do you really think rural areas have Best Buy stores? lol.

certainly more so than apple stores. i have an apple store closer to me than a best buy as well, but i wouldn't make a rule out of that even in nyc :)

It says Apple-certified in the thread title.
i promise you that certification is a LOT more meaningless than you assume

I doubt the OP is exaggerating. Every iPhone I owned (three total) were replaced while they were under warranty. Every phone owner I know (notice I didn't say iPhone specifically) has experienced hardware issues.

Electronics are complex. The more complex that something is, the more potential failures. And ekectronics are delicate. Why do you think race cars and rockets require so many handlers and constant observation? Why do you think Apple's stores are packed with repair seekers?
same here. the only iphone i owned that didnt get replaced by apple for a defect was my 5

They don't repair or replace on the spot.

For an iPhone that goes tango uniform, you are stuck waiting for the repair to come back. Never mind you no longer have a phone for a week and cannot call or be called.

As iPhone hardware is very buggy (every iPhone I have ever had has had a factory defect), this is a very lame service.

All Best Buy does is check out the hardware with an Apple diagnostic tool and apologize for leaving you without a phone line for a week while they send it in to Apple. Pure Applesauce

"As iPhone hardware is very buggy..."

That's a rather blanket statement. I've owned an iPhone every year since 2007, have upgraded to the newest model each year and have yet to have any issues with any of them. Ditto for quite a few other people I know in a similar situation.

Booked an appointment at 1:20 pm, got this in the morning:

"Good Afternoon,

You have an Apple Service reservation booked with us today that unfortunately cannot be kept at our Geek Squad Location in Sterling, VA. We currently do not have an Apple Certified Technician on our staff to complete repairs/ service requests. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you and we recommend that you schedule your service repair at your closest Apple Store. We will hopefully have an Apple Certified Repair Tech soon at our location.

Very Respectfully,"

i guess this is good for rural apple users.

That rural comment got my dander up, too! It's good news for anyone — rural, city, OR suburban — who lives a great distance from an Apple store.

We live in a city and county of several hundred thousand, but the nearest Apple Store is nearly 2 hours away! Our suburban neighborhood is definitely not rural. We have a Best Buy less than 10 minutes away.

Worse, though, were the illogical replies supporting the claim!

i'm sorry, is "provincial" better?

Doubling down in the error, albeit linguistically cute!

More of a generalization, really. Most Apple Stores ARE in metropolitan or suburban (read: high population) areas, which is generally the opposite of rural areas (lower population).

Wait! Just because most Apple stores are in metro or suburban areas doesn't mean that most metro or suburban areas have an Apple Store!

If x, then y is NOT the same thing as if y, then x!

Very illogical.

Put it this way. Just because most doctors in the U.S. are men (still) does NOT mean that most men in the U.S. are doctors!

Or, perhaps this will help. Just because most major art museums in the world are in big cities does not mean that most big cities have major art museums!

Of course, to end on a touch of levity, it also doesn't mean that they have Best Buys, either!

I get it. Anything outside of "the city" to you is rural. Keep in mind that people that live in true rural, as in the dictionary definition of rural, don't have big box stores close to them, typically. Unless, they are places like Walmart, Tractor Supply, a grocery store, you get the idea. This type of place might be known to you as "fly over,” perhaps.

All good, though. It just sounded odd, your equating rural with Best Buy. Best Buy stores are found in urban or suburban locations, not rural.

They focus on the $6 billion campus and mega-bucks movie service while the ordinary customer waits a week at BB to get their property switched out.

That rural comment got my dander up....*RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE*...most Apple stores are in metro or suburban areas doesn't mean that most metro or suburban areas have an Apple Store!...*RANT*....

I'm sorry your city lacks amenities. Connecticut Syndrome is what we used to call it in Manhattan.

The best thing the Geek Squad ever did was get me to switch from Microsoft computers to Apple. I had a HP laptop computer that was new enough to still be warranted, and it went berserk just days before I began a course that I needed it for. Since I had bought it at BB I took it to the Geek Squad for repair. After having it for a day they informed me that they couldn’t fix it at their level and needed to send it off. When I asked how long it would be before I got it back they said 7-10 working days. This meant I would not have it for the first two class meetings, and they couldn’t give me a replacement computer. I was seething, but had no choice but to let them send it off.

Apple had just opened one of their displays in this particular BB store and I went back and checked out their products, talking with the Apple rep. I walked out of the store with an entry level black MacBook to replace the HP and I’ve never looked back. I’ve never had that sort of problems with any Apple product that I’ve owned. When the HP came back, I sold it to a coworker who gave it to his sons to share in school. Twice after that it needed to go in for repairs and I would take it to BB to keep the warranty simple.

yes, i can see how that might have come off a bit too "city", didn't mean to sound condescending)
