For many years I participate in testing betas of all my Apple devices, including iPhones, Apple Watches, and my iPads - no real problems whatsoever. But beginning with iPadOS 26 betas this summer, I'm suffering frequent (few times a day) crashes and panic restarts on my iPad Air 4th Gen (2020), a 64 GB model with LTE. Before installing the iPadOS 26.1 RC, I tried to set up my iPad as a new device, without installing a backup at all. Even with only Apple's pre-installed apps, the crashes and panic reboots didn'd cease.

Just for interest: Does anyone suffer from the same problems? Or is it a singular one, maybe due to a hardware problem, which was coming into light only with iPadOS 26? If so, I'll make use of my AppleCare+ warranty.

It always depends on the kind of kernel panic you get (did you try sending the log through an AI of your choice?), but if it's frequent, it could indeed be a hardware issue, especially if it also happens after setting it up as new.

Thanks for your hint, ManuCH! I tried it and got indeed this:

Conclusion and Potential Resolution
The panic was not caused by any of the other listed services, which were functioning normally. The core issue is a failure related to the thermalmonitord service, most likely stemming from an inability to read data from essential thermal sensors (TG0B, TG0V).
Potential steps to resolve the issue:

  1. Software Troubleshooting: Ensure the device's operating system (iOS version 23B82, or macOS/iPadOS equivalent) is up to date, as software bugs related to sensor readings can sometimes be patched.
  2. Hardware Repair: The error strongly suggests a potential hardware fault where the specified thermal sensors are physically disconnected, damaged, or malfunctioning. This usually requires professional repair or replacement of the affected components (e.g., logic board, relevant sensor flex cables).

So I´ll wait until final release of iPadOS 26.1 to get a repair or better a replacement.
