I promised myself I would skip this year refreshment but like every year I just get too into it and want the newest iPhone. It's not like my iPhone XS Max has gone worse since the keynote of the iPhone 11 (Pro Max) but still.. just having this feeling of getting the newest version is something I'm anticipating every year, even though the improvements over the last years iPhone aren't as big as they supposed to be.

So am I 'sick' because I want the iPhone 11 Pro Max although owning the iPhone Xs Max?

No, I'm doing the same. If you have disposable income, meh - go for it. Yeah it's a little bonkers, because we're essentially rewarding Apple for not being very revolutionary anymore (I guess there's only so much you can do with a slab of glass and stainless steel), but hey - it's all fun and games and it's unquestionably going to be a better mobile device.

Or we're both sick, I guess. At least my wife and I agreed to be together in sickness and health. This counts, right? :D

Haha good to hear I'm not the only one with this problem. My girlfriend and I watched the keynote together and although we promised to each other that we wouldn't buy this years iPhone we both know that we wanna get it.
We try to persuade each other to buy new iPhone. It's bonkers if you think about it though.

Absolutely.

There’s literally a program for getting a new one every time they release one... so if you’re sick then what am I for being in that program? I need new iPhones - it’s my addiction. I will pay Apple every month for life to get them.

Maybe in the US but here in Germany there isn't a upgrade program.
If there were, I wouldn't think about it at all about upgrading every year.

Well, you should think twice.

Apple under Tim Cook increased the price of the iPhone, and I can bet it is because they think people will pay whatever the price for a new model, and they decided to test the waters (and not because of increased production costs).

The strategy may have been a success with the iPhone X (due to the novelty), but backfired last year when sales were lower than expected. This year, the successor to the iPhone XR is $50 cheaper.

So, I would have a little more criteria to buy it. Do you think the new iPhone brings enough enhancements? I think the improved battery life is a welcome addition, but I also think that it a joke that Apple charges $700 for a phone with a large notch and a non OLED screen, while keeps the OLED screeen for the more expensive version.

If the iPhone keeps selling in huge numbers because people are buying it just to have the latest, then Apple will keep increasing the prices and releasing pretty lame upgrades year after year. I am voting with my wallet and not upgrading mine, as I am disappointed with the new one.

I talk myself out of the upgrade every year.

But under IUP its the same price if I keep the old phone OR get the new one.

I only have to pay the Sales tax on the new phone.
SO for an extra $70 I get a new phone with:
Faster CPU and Graphics
Upgraded neural engine
Better Camera and videos
Brighter screen
Clean new housing
Faster larger charger
Better audio
Faster LTE & WiFi
Extra 4 hours of battery life which would have been reason enough to upgrade in years past

And a free year of Apple TV+ for the whole Family. That alone would have been $64 with tax.

Plus all the excitement of the preorder process

After annual upgrades for 9 years, I stuck with my iPhone X for two years and am getting the iPhone 11 Pro Max this year. BUT, only because I miss my Plus phones. You already have a Max - why not save some money and wait until next year?

You don’t need strangers to answer that.

Think of it this way - the person who tells you you’re crazy and wasting money might be the same person who perpetually pays £400 per month just for the privilege of having a brand new car every two years on balloon HP finance. To me, that’s utter madness. But that’s because cars are something I’m not particularly fussed about. But if others enjoy the new car experience, feel, smell, excitement and they can afford it - well, it’s their money and they should enjoy it.

Look I’m no doctor man, but I think you are sick. You seem to be showing all the signs of what we call “self-validation.“

I have the max, and I purchased the pro max. For me and many others, it’s a tradition to always get the new iPhone.

I would not say you are sick. People upgrade cars when theirs is still perfectly fine. I say to each their own. If it makes you happy and nobody gets hurt then upgrade away :)

Depends on your financial situation. Many people are on IUP or something similar. I just buy the phones sim free and unlocked and sell them every year. If I spend 1200 on a phone and sell it for about 600-700 when on done then I only pay 500-600 a year to own it. So that’s like 42-50 bucks a month. What ever not bad in my eyes lol.

‘but it’s not the same price. It’s the same monthly outlay - but now you’re committing to at least one more year of payments. If you keep a phone for 2-3 years the overall cost per month would be lower.

On the day of the keynote I sat and watched the announcement of the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

It was a very ho-hum moment. Being an owner of the iPhone XS MAX, I saw no real improvements.

I swore I would not purchase this new phone knowing that the 2020 phone was rumored to being far more revolutionary.

Then I sat...

...I sat and watched preorders go live on Friday.

Every hour I checked availability. The new Pro phones were either selling slowly or there was more stock than usual.

8.5 hours into preorder day I began playing around with pricing.

I could get $600 for my iPhone XS Max and get into the upgrade program and pay $36 a month for a 512GB Pro Max model.

I placed my order.

Really, not sure why I did it. Perhaps I didn't want to miss out on the joy of receiving a new phone on September 20th.

Give me credit...I didn't upgrade my Apple Watch Series 4 SS.

Sick? I don’t think so.
