This is a NYT opinion piece but I found it interesting and I also find most of what was said to be spot on...

America’s Cities Are Unlivable. Blame Wealthy Liberals.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/22/opinion/california-housing-nimby.html

    *snip*

To live in California at this time is to experience every day the cryptic phrase that George W. Bush once used to describe the invasion of Iraq: “Catastrophic success.” The economy here is booming, but no one feels especially good about it. When the cost of living is taken into account, billionaire-brimming California ranks as the most poverty-stricken state, with a fifth of the population struggling to get by. Since 2010, migration out of California has surged.

NYT is a paywall so here is another source:

Judge Dredd (that massive housing complex) just came into my head the moment I thought about what you wrote, LOL. Not sure why.

But yes, I agree. As someone who lives near LA, I would add one word to your statement:

Big cities need more affordable housing. I make a lot... but I can't afford to live closer to LA than I am right now (and my wife goes to LA for school) - and I'm about an hour away from LA with no traffic - 3.5 with traffic.

Turtles are 500,000 ^ 300*99 more important than humans... As someone who lives in California, you should know this already. I think I was off by a little too, but I like to underestimate. These plastic syringes are taxpayer funded so they're ok.

Plastic syringes are a social right where as plastic straws are not, unless they are, in which case they are, unless they are not...

The author makes four colossal mistakes:

    1. Equating the Democratic Party with 'the left'.

    2. Equating liberals with 'the left'

    3. Equating all democrat supporters with 'progressive'

    4. Equating people like Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden with any or all of the above

This is more junk journalism from the NYT.

    Where?
That is the problem with cities like SanFran - limited building space helping to drive up the cost.

I was part of the group that LAX bought out a couple years back. Talk about sticker shock when looking for another place to live. It was either go east toward SanBern/Riverside or higher crime areas if you were looking to maintain the same $$$ strata.

I bit the bullet, paid more and moved north (Ventura). Glad I did.

Yeah, affordable is a damn good word.

What exactly is a wealthy liberal? Never seen one in silicon valley with the exception of Tim Cook. Maybe you are talking about the Kardashians and their ilk?

I get constant calls about selling and as I look at how much I have to pay if I buy again it just makes me cringe.
I don't see my kids as home owners any time soon :(

Gee I dunno...... The article says America and is not silicone valley specific... There are 2 links provided if you don't have access to the NYT paywall. I certainly didn't drill the conversation down to the Bay Area..

The voters elect the politicians so it's primarily the voters fault.

I read the fox news web site article. ~10 sentences. And it cites California specifically (San Francisco, the major city next to Silicon Valley) in its examples.

I live here. I live next to Menlo Park, Atherton, Palo Alto, Burlingame and Hillsborough. Believe me, these people have no love liberals and their taxes.

Maybe New York city is different. Maybe they are different in Thousand Oaks or Ventura. Maybe they are different in Seattle. But here, the rich people are most definitely not liberals.

    Talk about exodus.
Four kids. One now lives in Oregon. Two live in Arizona. One is here still attending college. She will likely leave once she finishes her degree. Too expensive for them to live in decent areas.
Yep, I hear you. The cost is nuts.

Denying this fact is more like it. The fact is there. It can be seen or shown by nearly anyone.

"America's cities are unlivable" = "entire article is about Bay Area"

Yeah, I hear a lot of pointing out problems, but not a lot of solutions. The fact is San Francisco is located on the tip of a peninsula; there really isn't much more room for additional housing. And landlords don't want "affordable housing" or rent control because then they don't make as much money and they can't afford the housing costs here either (so they claim). And more housing will mean more traffic as well, which decreases livability.

Here's my solution: the tech bubble bursts and Facebook, Google, YouTube, etc. go out of business. Then the Bay Area will be affordable again. :)

If socialist liberals practiced what they preached there would be no rich liberals....

If conservatives practiced what they preached they would work harder or choose to live within their means and move somewhere they find living affordable. Can't afford to live here? Move. There are plenty of places where living is affordable. You may not like the heat or cold, but that's not my problem.
