There is always hope for a more rational candidate before the election.

In the 20xx's rationality is the thing that can't win.

As nutty as this sounds and how much I don't like her, but in my opinion Hillary Clinton would be the best choice to go up against Trump in 2020. I think I could almost tolerate Hillary if she would win the election over Trump, but that isn't going to happen as she isn't going to run again and the Democratic Party probably wouldn't allow her to anyways.

Well the front runner (Biden) just made the same mistake Hillary and Romney made, which was to attack the voters and not candidate. Biden insinuated that pretty much everyone who voted for Trump is a racist. All the DNC had to do was find the one moderate voice of reason and they win in a land slide. They believe this is the time to go radical to the left, if the economy holds up then good luck. The majority of Americans, hell the majority of democrats, don't believe a wild swing towards socialism is a good thing.

One of Hillaries biggest mistakes was attacking voters and singling them out as "deplorables". The second she did that, people who associated in those circles were never going to vote for her regardless of her own qualifications as a candidate.

I agree, it's a cardinal sin to attack the voters. Romney did the same, although he didn't call anyone names, when he said "47% aren't going to vote for me anyway". Now Biden is hopping on the "everyone is a racist" and "the country is racist" bandwagon, which usually goes over well. The left is taking their "if you don't agree with me you are (insert racist, homophobic, xenophobe, etc) to the campaign trail. It's a bold strategy cotton, lets see if it pays off.

That sort of rhetoric never generally works regardless of the side.

Idunno about US politics, but up here, taking such a hard line "you're with us, or against us" ends political careers.

Last time I heard it outright said was Conservative Cabinet member (Minister of Public Safety) and was trying to introduce new spying powers that required no warrant. Obviously it met with massive opposition and he oppened his mouth on live TV and said "if you're not with us, you're with the pedophiles"

he was removed from office shortly after..

and shortly after that he was caught getting his 15 year old baby sitter pregnant and forced to retire from politics.
