OK, not everyone knows what country Budapest is the capital of. But to claim that Europe is a country, France isn't a country, and to have never heard of Hungary? That's a new level of stupidity.

Kelly Pickler is not the sharpest knife in the drawer to begin with.

She's a "celebrity" who isn't as dumb as she appeared on that show...but she's close. I think that was partly acting, she was playing the "blonde" card so as not to appear "stupid" when she really didn't know something...

No, I have never heard of sarcasm. ;)

Edit: Sarcasm would be something like "kelly pickler is the smartest woman in the world."
Saying "America's Education system has failed," qualifies more as a sweeping generalization doesn't it?

She's never heard of Budapest but she knows they speak French there? That was freakin' hilarious. In a sad way...
Back when I was in college I worked summers at a call center for Sprint. One day this dumb (but cute) blond girl that worked with me came up to me in a panic because someone wanted to know how much long distance charges would be to call to Belgium. She had no idea what they were talking about, she had never even heard of Belgium before. It took me a few minutes to figure out what to even say to that...

A few hungarian engineers here at work would have slaughtered her for that.

    meh, whatever.

Teaching in a foreign school I can tell you maybe Americans aren't smarter in terms of knowing facts, math, etc. But they are more intelligent or at least have more common sense than others in other ways.

I agree, there is a lot more to being smart then just cramming useless book facts. You need common sense as well. You can be the smartest person but if you can't do daily tasks what good is it. The problem with the school system is that they teach you to memorize not to really learn anything.

    Funny.

But.. this is a show called "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?"
And so far everyone who has been on the show is NOT smarter than a 5th grader (AFAIK, no one has won the grand prize). Soo...

    Plus, it's on Fox.

    Isn't that a hyperbola?

    Edit: Yes it is.
Here, here. Common sense certainly does seem to be lacking in many people these days (even the most educated among us-anyone remember the astronaut who decided that space diapers had another use?). Americans are still quite clever in their own way (even Ms. Pickler, for her knowledge of European geography might be low, but her ability to discern how Simon felt about her was certainly above average).

I would wonder how many of us would get every question right on that show. I guarantee most people forgot a lot of what they learned in 5th grade.;)

For example, the show Who Wants To Be a Millionaire had a lot of pop trivia, doesn't mean a person is stupid for not knowing a lot of useless trivia.

I've only seen snippets of the show, but the questions don't seem overly difficult. They're mostly basic questions that most of us probably know, but that we have a hard time thinking of when we're on stage and have money dangled in front of us.
