Someone’s going to spend a long time in jail (or is getting a pardon)....

New indictment filed against Manafort names ally with Russian intel ties

Prosecutors have filed a new indictment against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort that also names as a defendant Konstantin Kilimnik, a close business colleague of Manafort's who prosecutors have said has close ties to Russian intelligence.

The indictment includes two new charges against both Manafort and Kilimnik:
-a count of obstruction of justice
-a count of conspiracy to obstruct justice (meaning the two allegedly worked together to tamper with witnesses).
Kilimnik, 48, of Moscow, is the 20th person to face charges in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. So far, 20 people and three companies have been charged.

Manafort had already been charged with:
    -conspiracy against the United States
    -conspiracy to launder money
-unregistered agent of a foreign principal
-false and misleading Foreign Agents Registration Act statements
    -false statements

Manafort is a political prisoner and I hope Trump pardons him.

I guess you can call him a political prisoner since his crimes involved attempting to manipulate elections on behalf of a foreign power, but that doesn't fit the normal definition of a political prisoner.

If this is a witch hunt, it’s the most productive witch hunt in history. :D

I hope we get to burn him at the stake when it’s over!

Manafort is a disaster, but how does witness tampering = collusion?

I was being snarky. Because a few of our select posters here seem to think the entire investigation is about collusion when it is not.

Oh gotcha. I'm a little slow on the sarcasm sometimes.

I'm glancing through the indictments and it's making my eyes bleed because it's boring legal crap. Was he charged/indicted for "attempting to manipulate elections on behalf of a foreign power"? Most of what I'm seeing is about money and not registering for his work with Ukraine and then the new witness tampering stuff.

At the very least Mueller is putting pressure on him to have him flip on bigger fish in exchange for a lighter sentence.

Even if he's pardoned, there's state level charges waiting for him. By the end of all this, Manafort will be wishing for some lead.

What election did he attempt to manipulate?
    --- Post Merged, Jun 8, 2018 ---
If Trump would have lost, none of this would have happened.

Plus, Russian meddling/hacking in our election hasn't even been closed to being proven. It's as real as Saddam's WMDs.

Keep living in an alternate world. Fact is - he won. And I don't think it was because of Russian meddling. But that doesn't mean Trump or his cohorts haven't committed crimes.

You know what else? If Aliens had destroyed the planet, none of this would have happened either. I mean - if you're going to go there... go there...

No one has forced Trump or his allies to do the things they have done or have allegedly done. Who one is immaterial.

That’s true about if he lost. But isn’t he charged with other crimes. Not the meddling? I thought that’s what happened.

Based on what? I guess you're only in favor for the rule of law when it applies to those with opposing political views.

Weren't you one of the ones chanting "lock her up"?

According to Trump it's bigger then the Salem witch hunts.

So you would have been ok with people getting away with crimes?

Well not in public view that is. The intelligence agencies haven't released much of any of the info to the public. Not having it publicly released does not equate that it hasn't been proven.

No no no! We throw the witches in the lake and see if they float!

If he floats, then he is a witch! But if he sinks to the bottom and drowns, then he's innocent!

Frankly, there's a poster in this thread that I'd like to turn into a newt...only it would be somewhat redundant to make the effort.

Even if this is true, it's not an argument that he's a political prisoner. That's a misappropriation of the term and fails to understand that Manafort's crimes have nothing to do with politics.

He's not facing prison because he's a Republican, he's facing charges because of 12 counts, including conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading FARA statements, false statements, and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts.

Manafort is also facing charges for witness tampering after he attempted to use encrypted communications in violation of his bond.

Meanwhile, his man Konstantin Kilimnik has serious ties to Russian intelligence agents, and he also had ties to Rick Gates, another Trump fixer.

Why do none of Manafort's charges have to do with the 2016 election then?

Explain that. I thought that was what this special counsel was about, not 2005 bank fraud charges.
