So today I did a test and had the 3G turned off for 5 hours and the battery came down from 100% to 80%, which is a reasonable value. Then I turned on the 3G and in 5 hours the battery dropped from 80% to 30%. All with the same usage, the only difference was the change between 3G and 2G.

There's a known issue with the time zone setting in 4S. Make sure it's turn off or else it will continuing searching a time zone for you.

If this is turn off then we can narrow down. My battery life suck but yours seem worse. Did you realize that the signal bar keep dropping to 1 bar then goes to full again? Mine does this and i think that's the issue with battery life. As Jagardn mentioned, it's normal to use up the battery if it's continuing searching for signal. However, I had 3G and 3GS but they never had to 'search' for a signal even if i live in the same place. 4S definitely have battery issue.

What do you call heavy usage? Can you confirm the difference in a couple of days please....I really want better battery life but I am running iOS 5.0.1 and jailbroken so i don't want to lose my jailbreak :(

Are you in an area where the phone is always searching for signal. My battery goes to hell when I'm in weak signal areas, but every phone does that.

I live in the center of a city so I have good reception, at home I've got all bars.

In the location system services I've got everything OFF.

Make sure u close all non using apps... people sometimes forget as they keep running in the background...

I'm closing them all the time...

I'm really desperate because I can't find a solution

Maybe it's even simpler..

It's a new phone - They also come with a new battery offcorse - I'm a photographer and I use a lot of batteries and the problem with new batteries is that they need a couple recharges (sometimes weeks) before they are at their best potential.. I'd say: give it a couple weeks.

I'm sure the bat. life will extend. With the 5.1 update, some bat. issues where solved so.. don't worry too much.

My 4S is coming in tomorrow and will let u know how things drain over here..

YES! I noticed it today and mine does that too!

4S has two antennas and I remember reading somewhere that it will use the best signal from one of the antenna possible. As someone said, search for signal will cause battery drain.

Rrod:
I have been using my 4S for 2 months and the battery do suck comparing to my previous iPhones so running in the battery shouldn't be the issue.

I recently used the dev-teams new downgrade technique to upgrade my phone from 5.0 to 5.0.1 - with this, the baseband has also been updated to the latest available version. My battery life seems to be considerably better than before - even better than my old 4S (which was at 5.0.1 before doing the warranty exchange). So I suspect that the main battery improvements have been coming through the baseband updates.
