I would like to have an iPad replace my desktop, but I think the 12.9 inch iPad is still too small. Any chance they would ever come out with a 17 or 20 inch iPad?

yes it's way too small
the surface studio is 28" and i still would make it double, or even triple the width of that

You don’t need an iPad 20’, you need the current iPad Pro with better support for external screens. Keyboard, mouse, trackpad, external disks is supported already and the software is amazing as it is.

if you want Apple Pencil support though.....

Why would you want to replace your desktop with an iPad? You think gorilla arm is a good idea?

Just get a computer. An iPad is a toy, it will never replace an actual computer.
not a computer? Tell that to Apple it definitely not a toy either

Most definitely not a toy. I get all of my work done on my 12.9 + MK. All is well without a Macbook so far, a brief respite after owning Macs for 35 years.

It's hard to say "it'll never happen," but I think anything much larger than 15 or 17 inches is not very likely for a mass market, touchscreen, portable device - the ergonomics start to get difficult - holding such a thing, for example - the weight and bulk are problematic, as is arm movement.

The larger the touchscreen, the larger the arm movements needed to use it. That's what 'gorilla arm' means. Unlike mouse, trackpad, or trackballs that can be scaled (small movement of mouse = large movement on a large display), touchscreen is 1:1.

I don't think there's a large market segment willing to deal with the ergonomics issues. That doesn't mean there won't be some users who will appreciate having that size to work with, especially pencil/stylus users who want to draw/manipulate a large canvas (graphic arts, CAD), or users of virtual work surfaces (audio mixing boards, aircraft instrument panels, etc.). Chances are, it'd be a very big-budget item - Mac Pro price range, not iPad Pro pricing. There could very well be an optional, Apple-designed support cradle for displays that might range as large as 40 inches. At those sizes and for that kind of usage, it's a good question as to whether they'd even be battery-operated.

Never say never, but to date there's been zero rumours or leaks of anything larger than 12.9" so not for the foreseeable future.

I personally feel much beyond 14" and you're getting into territory where the iPad as we know it stops being workable. At 17"+ I think you would have to be talking about more of a touch interfaced Mac device. i.e. something which is more desk bound and mouse/ cursor first which also supports touch/ pen input (like Windows) rather than being built around touch first, and to be held in your hands.

I think a 16" is possible. It would be primarily for art, possibly also as a control surface. Apple
could charge a lot for such a device

I assume it's possible (even if it is a bit unlikely).

After all, MR commenters routinely post about their 13', 15' or 16' MacBooks.

A 20 inch iPad Pro would be tiny side-by-side and far more portable.

;)
