Any ideas of what's going on with my Applications (Adobe mainly) ?

    Hi,

So I'm working in Illustrator and Photoshop quite a lot and I've noticed that whenever I click on a path or text box, the application/computer freezes. Once the ' Beach Ball' has stopped spinning, I can slowly but surely edit the text or alter the path.

It's like my computer is bogged down with viruses or something and it's not responding. It's not unique to Adobe applications though, my CAD program (ArchiCAD) is having similar problems. When I draw lines or write text, the application take forever to respond. On each occasion I get the 'Brach Ball'

Not sure if this should be in the Design forums or Mac OS X Forum... If I get no luck here, I will post it on the other area.

I realise this is quite vague and it may not be common, but since it's fairly global across most applications, maybe there is a solution.

    Thank You

The Text Tool in PS makes my iMac bog down too, but after five to ten seconds (after I selected it) I can fully use it again.

Have a look at Activity Monitor ( Applications / Utilities / ) and select All Processes and sort by CPU to see what the culprit may be.

image below uses sorting by CPU as an example

I've just launced cinema4D so that's taking up 380 CPU... The thing is my Mac is more than capable.... I formatted the HD a few days ago as the printer was having issues and this was the only option. Prior to that I could do as much as I wanted, no problems... It's just text in ArchiCAD and Adobe applications mainly.

Mind you, in Acrobat Pro 9, zooming in on a small file size PDF makes it crash:confused:

I forgot to add; if I highlight or place a marque around the text box to select it, the application responds correctly and does not freeze. It's normally when I directly click on the text box or part or line that it causes a crash...

I'm pretty sure it's loading in the font menu previews. Thus the delay. I think Adobe chose to not have this happen when the app launches to speed up the loading time.

It helps to turn them off in your preferences.

I've just booted in safe mode and there are no problems. It's not just fonts though, it's also lines, paths fills etc.

Repairing Disk permissions and resetting RAM did nothing. Safe Mode is the only was to work properly. What can I do to have it working properly in 'normal' mode? Again, this only happened after a full restore.

    Looks like a font problem

Hi, I had the same problem when I installed Snow leopard, looks like it creates a conflict with Helveticas, it installs a new version and makes a mess.

I use Suitcase and after a lot of work I cleaned up my system... Do not remove the new Helveticas or touch anything from the system folder, instead deactivate the old versions and you won't have problems with adobe's CS, unfortunately some of your documents will suffer because of the new version of the font will move the tracking on them, sorry.

    I hope this helps.

I have only installed one new font...

This doesn't explain the issues with the paths or lines though. These documents have no text in them if that matters. Also, in my CAD program, external drawings cause freezes too which does not happen in safe mode.

What is it in safe mode that differences from normal mode to stop these mishaps occurring?

    Thank You.
