Are they are Lightning\USB Drives that work with Files App without adapter? In other words you can plug in the lightning end and see it natively in the Files app without some other app?

Its an interesting question I'm keeping an eye on too - especially since Apple allude to it on the iPad 7th Gen's marketing page - https://www.apple.com/ipad-10.2/

Sandisk lightning flash drive still requires the "iXpand drive" app from Apple Store to communicate.
On my iPad Pro 11" I connected natively to many usb type c drives with no problems. All of them were formatted in exFAT.

Thanks.
I have the impression that it works well with usb-c iPads but not so well with lightning+adapter/hub.
Most posts on iPhones mention the same problem.
