    Hi guys,

I would like to ask you this simple question. I just bought the WD My Book Studio Edition 500GB and I'm just wondering what your WD will behave after you shut down your computer?

As for me, when I shut down my computer, it goes into standby mode. The LED light is flashing every 5 seconds. Is this normal? Why is it not powering off? Is it okay to power it on & leave it on standby mode all the time?

I have a 500gb My Book Pro, which I believe is the old version of the Studio. I'll check to be sure later, but I think mine shuts down when the computer is turned off as well as when the computer is in sleep.

I have the regular My Book 500 GB (USB 2 version) and it spins down and turns off its light when the computer goes to sleep or is turned off.

Yeah, same here. My MyBook does the same thing, turns off when the computer does the same thing.

Then does anyone have a clue why mine's going into standby mode when my iMac is shut down? Of course, I can always manually turn it off but if leaving it on standby mode is not going to damage my WD external drive, I'm going to do that. Can anyone tell me if it's safe to leave it on standby mode all the time?

This is exactly what I did,

    1. Plugged it to imac via Firewire 800
    2. Partitioned it to 2 volumes
    3. Ran Time Machine for back up which took me 20 minutes
    4. Upgraded to the latest firmware
    5. Installed Drive Manager

I'm considering buying one of these. Always loved the enclosure en with the quad-interface they are a steal at 90€.
I keep reading bad stuff about them though. How noisy are they and how reliable?

Thanks (sorry little OT, but opening a thread for this is kinda lame)

I just got mine (500GB version), and mine is a lot quieter than my previous My Book Home Edition. I'm a little worried, because this one has more poor reviews that most My Book hard drives, but I have not had bad luck with WD in the past, so I still trust them. Check out the comments on MacWorld's review of the Studio Edition if you want some more information. My thought is that since the Studio Edition hasn't been criticized too much (other than the late update to make it compatible with Leopard) on these forums, it can't be a terrible product. However, in addition to using this drive as a backup, I will still back up my really important files, photos, and music on DVDs, as I would with any drive.

I have the same problem, the drive will only shut off by unplugging it... it's so annoying! The power button doesn't seem to do anything...
    Help, anyone?

I have a 750GB Studio WD drive, and as much as I like it, its weirdness with Leopard is...weird! I had to install the WD Drive Manager software for the power button to do anything, and Leopard's all-too aggressive power management still insists on parking the drive's heads every 10 seconds. It also goes to sleep and wakes up randomly, and the clunk noise from its parking heads drives me nuts. I just push the power button on the back to turn it on and off as needed. But you need the WD Drive Manager software for this to work.

I just turn it off and periodically do a backup every few weeks.

I'm bringing this thread up from the dead..but I'm having some issues with my new Studio TB drive. I reformatted in 2 partitions, 1 for time machine. I didn't install anything that came with the drive initially, and have installed the WD Drive Manager from the website.

This made my capacity light work, however, I don't want the WD icon constantly running in my taskbar. Also - is there something else I need to install to see something like a preferance pane? Seems like I should be able to set options like energy saver, etc..All I see if I select the drive manager is ABOUT and MY MYBOOK FIREWIRE showing the % full.
