I got a new Apple TV 4K when it came out for the living room and like it a lot. I was thinking about upgrading the one in the bedroom but then again, it’s already a last gen 4K version. The only thing I want with it is the new remote. So I’m thinking just get the new remote and keep the box

anybody else do this?

I got the 2021 remote to use with my ATV 4K 2017. It works great. Much better than that POS of a remote that it replaced.

Problem I have with it is the siri button on the side , keeps activating when i either pick the remote up or it bangs into things around it , wish it was backlit too - oh and why move the pause and mute buttons around ???

I also bought the new remote for the „old“ ATV4K. Mainly because the new 4K didn‘t really add much that would be worth upgrading for, at least for the price. Moneywise, this is also not a great deal but the old remote was a real pain point for me. After using it since release I can say the new one is definitely better. Not great, but better. I don‘t like the feel of it that much - it‘s small but heavy and has sharp corners, personally I just don‘t think it feels great in the hand. Switching the position of the play/pause button is an unforced error that occasionally still trips me up. The side button is easy to press accidentally, which is annoying because I never want to use that button at all. In fact, I would disable it completely if I could, but this is Apple we‘re talking about. You can switch what it does, but not disable it. Lastly, I like the idea of the touchwheel but not the implementation. I sometimes fail to activate it by pressing and holding, making me scroll backwards because of the normal touch input. You can disable touch and only use the button clicks, but that also disables the touchwheel. Why those can‘t be separate is beyond me. I would like to disable the normal touch and only keep touch on the wheel.

So yeah. The new remote is ridiculously priced and not that good. But it is better than what it replaced. If the old remote annoyed you enough to make that worth it, go for it.

I forgot about that issue, probably because a bought a case to put it in then slightly modified the case so it is now much more difficult to activate the Siri button. That solved the problem for me. Making the button difficult to activate wasn't a bad choice for me since I don't use Siri on any of my devices. I can still activate the button if I want to, but I have to concentrate to do so as it is pretty much walled off now.
