Curious how people in this community actually use their health data long-term.

I feel like Apple Watch collects a ton of useful data, but most of us (myself included) just glance at daily numbers and rarely connect the dots over weeks or months — like noticing a slow change in resting heart rate, sleep quality, or activity levels before it becomes an actual issue.

I've been part of a small project exploring this problem, and I'm trying to get a better sense of how real users think about their own data before building further. If you have thoughts on this (or would be open to a quick conversation), drop a comment below.

I never used the short term or long term data much and have started to wear my watch less and less. I usually just wear it when working out now. I felt like I should wear the watch to capture the data but eventually realised I do nothing with it.

I got a Garmin recently to see if there was a difference and it does seem to package the data in a more actionable way (body battery, stress score) than the Apple Watch. However, I’m sceptical about the accuracy of these measurements and whether they could affect my performance through the nocebo effect.
 
I dont use health data much. I look at it as: If I can't sleep or am in pain = somethings wrong. I can see insomnia and feel pain a mile away so, since I am not missing sleep and I am not in pain, I dont need to monitor anything.

That's interesting about the Garmin comparison — makes sense that raw data without context doesn't feel worth tracking.

I believe that if you go into the health app on your phone, then notifications, then turn on "Trends", you'll get on-device notifications when changes like this occur.

I've received them for changes in heart rate, changes in the amount of walking I do, and other metrics.

I’m definitely enjoying the fact that I have years worth of health data to look back at and compare to my current state.

I think this trend thing, especially with the increase of AI in our lives, is going to be invaluable as I age. At least I’d like to think so.

Maybe just me, but scrolling back over the years definitely gives me a sense of : “Oh, that’s pretty normal for me…” or “Wow, I’m doing better now!”
 
That's a great point about the "oh, that's normal for me" moments — I think that's exactly what most tracking tools miss. They show you the number, but not what it means for you specifically over time.

I need to check my heart rate several times an hour since my heart is Tachycardia with a touch of Atrial fibrillation.
For fitness: cycling, swiming, walking etc is more long term for exercising progress.
 
I have my data way back before long covid. I could track where my blood oxygen went way down. Average walking HR was 110bpm. It is all there. My doctor was amazed my blood O2 went down into the low 90s and high 80s.

That's a really compelling use case — being able to correlate AFib episodes with long-term trends rather than just single readings sounds genuinely useful for managing something like that.

Wow — that's an incredible example of the data actually mattering, especially with your doctor confirming what you were seeing. That's exactly the kind of insight we're trying to make easier to surface and track over time.

I originally bought the AW for sleep tracking and it’s been super useful for that, and I also like seeing other metrics. I try not to get too micro about it day to day, but if something changes year over year or month over month, it’s good to get a heads-up.

I will say, though, that some of it you might have to take with a grain of salt. I got a number of hypertension alerts for a while and they were freaking me out, so I bought a blood pressure cuff... which showed nothing out of the ordinary. Pressure was also totally normal when I went in for a physical, and the doctor said this wasn’t the first time he’d heard of false positives with the Apple Watch and hypertension. I think at the end of the day it can only do so much with the sensors it has on board.

On the subject of data, though, I still find it really frustrating and arbitrary that none of my Health data can be viewed on my Mac. I can only look at it and interact with it on some of the smallest screens I own. It’s fundmentally MY data, literally generated by me and using devices I bought -- I should be able to see it on my Mac if want to, IMO.

I’m a Garmin user, and somehow Garmin has managed to produce some data that’s actionable. I agree about the accuracy, maybe that’s the reason Apple doesn’t have a “body battery”, because there no hard evidence. Apple tends to only say or do things that are correct.

apple was reportedly planning to move away from the Health app being merely a repository of info, to a more analytical and advisory approach in using the data it contains.
it was reported on Macrumors that this effort is now on the back burner.

i had been using Athlytic but its more of a training focused app than a health and fitness app.

but then i found Bevel.
i really like it. it brings together all of the health and fitness and nutrition data in a proactively AI context.
i've taught it to do additional fitness calculations (such as DHRPS (Daily Heat Rate per Step (across a 60 day window))).
its not pushy: very unjudgemental. doesn't want to bombard you with notifications.
it gives 3day/7day/1month/3month/1year analyses of all data (like HRV, VO2max, HRR, resting Heart Rate, Daily Stress, sleeping stress, etc.
its agentic in the sense that, for example, it doesn't normally access UV light strength, but it decided to begin to look up that data on the net for me since i told it one time that the UV was extreme outside so i would rather go to the gym instead of running outside that day. ever since that time it looks up that data when its making recommendations for a run in the afternoon or not.
best thing is it brings in (references) outside articles and data to provide well balanced and accurate health info to inform its recommendations. you can set its preferences to show you the actual steps it is going through as its arriving at its recommendations while reviewing your data, (ie. "thinking").
i have begun to use it to record my various strength training machine exercises at the gym directly from my apple watch. im not a gym rat. but Bevel has made that part of fitness data accessible and meaningful for me.

im keeping my athlytic subscription for one more year so that i can have a 2nd app to be looking at a subset of what Bevel can do in order to assure Bevel's trend data iand recommendations are sound.

The false hypertension alerts followed by a normal reading at the doctor is such a good example of why raw sensor data alone can be misleading without more context — that's exactly the kind of gap we're trying to help close.

Also completely agree on the data access point — it really should be easier to actually use your own health data beyond just glancing at a small screen.
