This has been a long standing software flaw in OSX
The Hardware sees and recognizes 16GB of Memory under other operating systems like Windows and Linux but NOT OSX

Want to and need the ability to install and use 16GB of memory in my MID 2010 17 Inch MacBook Pro i7 2.66 GHZ GeForce GT330m.

Apple can and has the ability to FIX OSX so owners of MID 2010 MacBook Pros can install and use 16GB of memory instead of PUNNY 8GB

That's nothing to do with OSX, my Mac Pro can utilise 16GB (or more) since launch (2009).

In fact, the last test from Yosemite shows that OSX can run 160GB of RAM (it's 160, not 16) without any issue. Hackintosh guys may run more than that actually.

If all you need is just 16GB, sure 10.6 can do that without any trouble.

Since you create this post is High Sierra forum. So, I assume you want High Sierra can support 16GB RAM. And it can.

MACBOOK PRO. Not MAC PRO DESKTOPS
2 very different machines

I know, but you are not complaining your hardware, you are complaining the software.

Indeed, you are exactly right, the limitation is your MacBook Pro, the laptop, the hardware, not the OS. The OS clearly can "see" 16GB of RAM or above.

I found threads that the problem lies in the firmware which is software not hardware
Why can I install 2 8GB of memory then in my MacBook Pro for a total of 16GB and then install Ubuntu Linux and the 16GB of memory is seen and usable BUT NOT IN OSX??

Oh~ I see, sorry about my misunderstanding, clearly I didn't read your post carefully, apologise about that. You mean, if you install 16GB of RAM, your machine can boot with all 16GB in Linux.

But with the same 16GB of RAM, it can't boot to MacOS, or only 8GB shows up?

Did you ever report this to Apple?
[doublepost=1507211624][/doublepost]I agree this seems like a firmware issue, and firmware definitely is a software issue. However, still not OS issue.

now you understand
did not report this
technically the machine was never supported to run 16gb
but with the price of current Apple hardware so HIGH and geared toward the rich and famous like their iPhones
It would be nice if they could fix this so us Common Folk who have been with Apple for years and years can hold on to our 17 Inch screen Laptops which Apple chose to drop. BIG MISTAKE! as with dropping GET A MAC TV COMMERCIALS

I Read The Bible. I follow The Bible. The Good Book
GREED and Stealing are a Sin. APPLE commits BOTH

Hi Guys, here is your proof that FINALLY 16GB does work under os x:
[doublepost=1514869853][/doublepost]The Seller of the same 17 inch I have confirms that ALL 16GB is recognized and working under High Sierra. I am not sure about Sierra, but Linux and Windows does recognize it. You will need PC3-8500 for this to work.. here is the link which tells it all:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/322943322375?ul_noapp=true

The topic is now put to rest.. the 17 inch 2010 supports 16GB fully and with no problems.
[doublepost=1514869956][/doublepost]Proof - seeing is believing.

I have two 17 inch MBPs, and I'm doing everything I can to keep them working. I mean it's amazing that they still work like new, and they are almost 8 year old. (They are a little slow when compared to my iMac Pro.)
A PC running Windows would never last for half of that time. Apple switched to making everything smaller, like the MacBook Air. Some of us prefer using the bigger screens.
I also agree with your comment about Apple gearing everything "toward the rich and famous."

That I don’t know, you can try it.

Hello Good People,
Came across this post and wanted to know if the 16GB memory upgrade would work under old OS like Snow Leopard?

My MacBook Pro is a 17-inch, Mid 2010, MacBookPro6,1, currently with 8GB 1067 MHz DD43

I've watched a few video with the upgraded memory and notice some are sticks of:
Upgrading the Late 2011 MacBook Pro to 16 GB of RAM!
8G DDR3 1333 CL9 1.5V 2Rx8

While others are using:
8G DDR3 1066 PC3-8500

Thanks for the help:)
