Safari has been acting up for me, for quite a while now. Randomly, and for no apparent reason it will spin the fans up and be chugging away at something with as much CPU as it can get, while basically sitting idle. Then today, this started. The bookmarks that should be there have gone missing. Below this they continue normally as far as I can tell.

The missing bookmarks issue happens to me every single time. Can't remember exactly when this started but it was a long time ago (many months). Never had a fan spin-up, though.

"Show less" followed by "Show more" shows me all bookmarks but it is cumbersome... I am now using the favorite's bar. Never found a solution to that problem.

When the issue happens open Activity Monitor and see what is shown as the highest CPU usage.

If you create a clean new user account, login to the new user account, does the issue still happen in Safari?

Yes, similar behavior. Or even worse: Safari only shows 2 rows, then I press "Show more", and all disappear :D back to square 1 i.e. the behavior described above. Show less followed by Show more displays them all.
Not sure if 10.15 corrects this bug?

Not a button, just the text on the right side of the safari window.

yes I know that, but not inside a bookmarks folder. Only on the main screen. at least for me. For proof, here is a picture of my Music Bookmarks folder which suddenly decided to work for this demonstration. Much like a car that never makes "that noise" for the mechanic...

I tried again, and...

Yes, this is exactly how it looks like on my side too. Sorry I was not too clear. When I start safari or open a new tab, I always get your 2nd picture.
